Praying the rosary remains a regular part of programming on the Catholic Television Network of Youngstown.

The Rev. James “Jim” Korda, pastoral director for 24 years, said viewers may participate when the rosary is recited on programming at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and at 8:30 a.m. Sundays. “Everyone is invited to pray with us,” Father Korda said.

Father Korda also noted that October is known as the month of the rosary; the Feast of the Lady of the Holy Rosary was observed Friday.

The priest said he has received feedback from those who are hospitalized or homebound. “They pray with us and find comfort. It’s nice to hear that,” he shared. “I also know that some nursing homes tune in during the rosary times for residents.”

Father Korda also said he explains the Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and Luminous mysteries. The Joyful Mysteries are noted on Mondays and Saturdays, and include the Annunication of the Lord to Mary and Nativity of Jesus; the Sorrowful Mysteries are on Tuesdays and Fridays and include Jesus carrying the cross and the crucifixion; and the Glorious Mysteries are on Wednesdays and Sundays and include the Resurrection of Jesus and Assumption of Mary into heaven.

The Luminous Mysteries on Thursdays are relatively new, he said. “They are taken from the life of Jesus,” Father Korda said. These mysteries are the baptism in the Jordan, wedding at Cana, proclamation of the kingdom, the transfiguration and institution of the Eucharist.

Father Korda said special shows on Thursdays are devoted to the Luminous Mysteries.

Father Korda said CTNY uses the mass media tool to reach out to people who may not be able to participate in church services and prayer events because of physical limitations and/or work schedules.

“The programming gives people an opportunity to continue. ... This allows us to share our faith,” he said. “It’s what we are about.”

The Diocese of Youngstown website, www.doy.org, provides a section on CTNY, which serves the Catholic, Jewish, Protestant and Orthodox communities. Contact information is 330-533-2243 and email to brdomCTNY@aol.com.

The diocese began CTNY in 1980 to deliver its radio and TV programs. In the 1990s, CTNY expanded its programming and serves as the production and network facility for Ecumenical Television Channel. ETC serves Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania and is a collaboration of Christian denominations and the Jewish community. Religious and spiritual programming is the focus.
