Penn State students march in search for clown

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.

Hundreds of Penn State students marched around searching for a clown that campus police say existed only in their minds.

Pennsylvania has been plagued by bizarre clown sightings — most of them hoaxes — and the recent incident at Penn State seemed to be more of the same, if on a larger scale.

Penn State police Sgt. Mike Nelson conservatively estimated at least 500 students marched and chanted during a “clown hunt” that was prompted by Twitter and other social media posts.

Nelson says there was “no property damage, no injury and no violence.” There were also no clowns sighted, except for one image projected onto the side of an apartment building. Police say the students gathered in various locations in downtown State College and on campus.

Doughnut heist leads to capture of wanted man

HOBBS, N.M.

Authorities say a fugitive’s sweet tooth helped police capture a wanted New Mexico man after he tried to take a doughnut without paying for it.

The Hobbs News-Sun reports that Gregory Mendoza was arrested recently outside a bakery after police received a report he stole a doughnut.

Police then discovered the 35-year-old Mendoza was wanted on a number of charges, including cruelty to animals and traffic violations.

New Mexico court records show Mendoza has 10 pending charges out of Carlsbad Magistrate Court from July.

Walrus begin arriving near Alaska village

ANCHORAGE, Alaska

Pacific walrus are beginning to come ashore near a remote community on Alaska’s northwest coast in what’s become a marine mammal phenomenon caused by a warming climate.

The massive animals have gathered by the thousands each fall on a barrier island near the Inupiat Eskimo village of Point Lay. Last year, 35,000 hauled out on the rocky beach.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spokeswoman Andrea Medeiros says about 1,000 walrus are currently at the site. Medeiros says the village notified her agency Friday that the animals have begun arriving.
