Noren matches course record at Carnoustie

CARNOUSTIE, SCOTLAND

Alex Noren of Sweden was leading the Dunhill Links Championship after carding 64 at Carnoustie to equal the course record on Thursday.

The 34-year-old Noren, who won the Scottish Open in July and the European Masters last month, fired eight birdies to finish at eight-under-par.

The tournament is split between three courses, with players alternating between St. Andrews, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie.

Yokomine grabs lead after first-round 67

TAIPEI, Taiwan

Sakura Yokomine bogeyed the final hole for a 5-under 67 and a one-stroke lead over Brooke Henderson, Paula Creamer and Amy Yang on Thursday in the LPGA Taiwan Championship.

Yokomine eagled the par-5 12th and had three back-nine birdies at windy Miramar before dropping the stroke on the par-5 18th in the second of six events on the tour’s Asian Swing. The 30-year-old Japanese player is winless in two seasons on the LPGA Tour after winning 23 times on the Japan LPGA Tour.

Day skipping Aussie events to rest back

Jason Day is skipping the Australian Open and World Cup of Golf in his home country because of the back injury that forced him to withdraw during the final two PGA Tour events of the season.

Ranked No. 1 in the world, Day said Thursday that he has been advised to rest his back and that the November trip to Australia would have conflicted with his rehabilitation and rest periods. He tore a ligament in the back.

Woods to be a captain at Liberty National

JERSEY CITY, N.J.

Tiger Woods will be at Presidents Cup next year with or without his golf clubs.

U.S. captain Steve Stricker said Wednesday he has chosen Woods, Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III and three-time Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples to be his assistants for the matches next year at Liberty National.

International team captain Nick Price said his three assistants would be Ernie Els, Geoff Ogilvy and Tony Johnstone.
