The Poland library welcomed author Nancy Christie to host a book signing as part of the Buy a Book, Earn a Buck Fundraiser which benefits the Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.
Along with Christie participating in the fundraiser, she also celebrated the anniversary of her books, “Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories” (2014) and “The Gifts of Change” (2004).
“For every book that’s sold during the event, I donate a dollar to the Friends. I’ve done this at a number of different communities,” said Christie. “It’s my way of repaying the community or the facility for hosting me.”
Christie traveled a lot when her first book “The Gifts of Change” was released. Ten years later, when Christie released her second book, she wasn’t able to travel as much due to family issues. Now given the opportunity to travel more, she is looking into going on a Birthday Book Tour to celebrate the birthday of her second book turning two.
In April, Christie traveled to Florida and the traveling helped Christie finish her book. As she made her way to Florida, she took notes of where she stopped and what she passed to make sure everything she writes about in the book is accurate to the real life setting. She talks to locals and others who are traveling to get a point of view from someone outside of herself.
“It’s very interesting to see life and art. They intersect. And sometimes one predates the other,” said Christie.
Christie will be hosting the third year of the Celebrate Short Fiction Day event on Dec. 21.
