Vow renewal and party celebrate Calcagnis' 70th anniversary

Eugene and Antonette Calcagni of Poland marked their 70th anniversary with a party of family and friends Sept. 17 at St. Paul the Apostle Church hall in New Middletown. It was hosted by their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They also renewed their vows Sept. 18 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica in Youngstown, where the couple are members.
Their children are Jean and Gene Wargo of New Middletown and Joe and Cyndi Calcagni of Murrells Inlet, S.C. They also have six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A son, Joseph A. Calcagni, is deceased.
The former Antonette Popio married Mr. Calcagni Sept. 14, 1946, at Immaculate Conception Church in Youngstown.
Mrs. Calcagni is a homemaker and a member of the church festival committee and its senior citizens club.
Mr. Calcagni worked for the James A. Henderson Co. for 15 years and Allstate Insurance Co. for 30 years. He retired in 1986 as a property unit manager. He is an officer of the Vestibule Club, member of the church festival committee, its senior citizens club, Italian-American Veterans Post 3, Youngstown Morra League Hall of Fame and National LSM Association. He was Our Lady of Mount Carmel Italian Man of the Year in 2013.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during WWII with the amphibious forces in the South Pacific including the invasion of the Philippines and Okinawa.
