AUSTINTOWN

There is a vacancy on the Austintown school board due to the resignation of Louis Chine.

Kathy Mock, board president, said Chine, who is in his second term, resigned from the school board effective immediately for health reasons. In his resignation letter, Chine said that he will continue to support the district.

The board must begin the process to replace Chine and name the replacement within 30 days. The newly appointed school board member will serve until Dec. 31, 2017.

The district will be taking letters of interest for new board members. Those interested should turn in their letter and resume by 4 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Austintown Board Office, 700 S. Raccoon Road. For information, contact the board office at 330-797-3900, ext. 1510.

Mock said the board will review all applications and decide on the replacement at its regular meeting Oct. 27.

Voting information

BOARDMAN

The Ohio Secretary of State’s Office will have a regional liaison at the Boardman library branch, 7680 Glenwood Ave., from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday to discuss with residents voting information and its business service programs.

Prayer vigil set

WARREN

The Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative will sponsor a prayer vigil to end domestic violence at 6 p.m. Wednesday at courthouse square downtown. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Leaders from the Warren Family Mission and the Rev. Gena Thornton will lead the group in prayer.

The vigil also will recognize the domestic violence alleged in the case of Bresha Meadows, 15, who is charged in the shooting death of her father.

Pink badges

NEW MIDDLETOWN

New Middletown police officers will display pink badges on their uniforms during October, which is breast-cancer awareness month.

Mahoning County has a high rate of breast cancer, and this endeavor seeks to remind everyone that early detection is important, officials said. According to the Susan G. Koman website, there will be 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer as well as 40,450 breast cancer deaths this year.

Program to resume

COLUMBIANA

The Walk Warm program for the Columbiana Exempted Village School District community resumes Monday.

The program invites adults to walk in the school hallways as a healthful way to exercise away from inclement weather conditions.

The high school is open for this program Monday through Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. It will be closed on holidays and when school is canceled.

Participants can exit at any time through any door, but entrance can be made only through the west side gym doors. A measured course is posted for walkers who choose to keep an accurate log of distance.

Joshua Dixon Elementary School also will be open for this program Mondays through Fridays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. It will be closed on holidays and for inclement weather as well.

Niles City Schools are offering exams for cook helper, custodial helper and secretary at 6 p.m. Oct. 25 at Niles Middle School Auditorium, 411 Brown St. Applications may be obtained beginning Monday until Oct. 17 at the Niles School administration building, 309 N. Rhodes.
