Multiple clown sightings reported in Canfield

CANFIELD

As reports of clown sightings have popped up around the country, Canfield police say the phenomenon has hit their jurisdiction.

“A lot of people are choosing to partake in dressing up as clowns. We have had reports of people jumping out in front of traffic, standing in people’s yards,” said Police Chief Chuck Colucci. “It’s an extremely dangerous decision that these people taking part have made.”

Calls about clown sightings began about three weeks ago and have ramped up since then, Colucci said. Thus far, his department has fielded “multiple” calls about it.

His department has been working with the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office to monitor the issue. As of Friday afternoon, Colucci was not aware of any arrests, but said law-enforcement officials know who has been participating in the trend.

It’s cause for concern, he said, because of the behaviors the costumed individuals are exhibiting.

“Jumping in front of traffic is absolutely not safe – they’re taking their life in their own hands,” Colucci said. “Then, anytime you step on someone’s property without permission, you’re taking a chance to be charged criminally.”

With these reports, plus the start this weekend of Blood Moon Farm’s Canfield “Scareground” activities, Canfield police and the sheriff’s office will be on alert, Colucci said.

“We’re aware of what they’re doing, and we’ll be looking for it. The goal is to keep everyone safe, and not create any panic,” he said. “If anybody sees this in their neighborhoods, or has this happen when they’re driving, we encourage them to contact local authorities.”
