Guatemalan dies while in ICE custody in Arizona

ELOY, Ariz.

A woman from Guatemala died Sunday while in immigration detention in Arizona, marking the third in-custody death nationwide for Immigration and Customs Enforcement since Oct 1.

ICE announced Monday that 36-year-old Raquel Calderon de Hildago died at a hospital near the Eloy Detention Center after suffering a series of seizures.

She was transferred to ICE custody Nov. 23, six days after the Border Patrol apprehended her. ICE says she was awaiting removal to her home country.

Immigration activists have been critical of the Eloy Detention Center over its conditions, which they say have led to the deaths of 15 people since 2004. The center is run by a private prison operator. ICE has said its facilities are thoroughly inspected to ensure that people are in a safe environment.

Lawsuit: Kansas State’s inaction led to another rape

WICHITA, Kan.

A female student says Kansas State University’s failure to investigate the rape of another woman allowed the same alleged assailant to sexually assault her.

The accusations were in court documents filed Monday seeking to add Crystal Stroup to a lawsuit against the university by Sara Weckhorst.

The Associated Press typically does not name alleged rape victims, but their attorney said both women wanted to be identified.

Stroup says she was raped in 2015, while Weckhorst said she was attacked in 2014. If the court agrees to add Stroup to the lawsuit, she will be the third woman to sue the university this year over rape allegations.

Kansas State said it was reviewing the documents.

Jared Ralph Gihring was charged with rape in both cases, and was expelled from the university.

Woman pushing stroller killed

PHILADELPHIA

A woman pushing a baby stroller has been struck and killed by a bus in downtown Philadelphia, but the child is OK.

Police say the 64-year-old woman was hit by a Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority bus around 5 p.m. Monday and dragged several feet. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the stroller with a baby boy inside was not hit. It rolled and struck a curb. The child was taken to a hospital to be evaluated as a precaution.

The driver of the bus remained at the scene.

Police continue to investigate.

3 dead, at least 5 sickened after holiday dinner

ANTIOCH, Calif.

Health officials say three people died and at least five more were sickened after eating Thanksgiving dinner at an event organized by a church in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch said Monday it received eight patients with probably food-borne symptoms between Friday and Saturday. It says three of the patients died, four patients were treated and released and one remains hospitalized.

San Francisco television station KTVU reports Golden Hills Community Church confirmed it hosted the dinner at the American Legion Hall in Antioch on Thanksgiving. A call to the church was not immediately returned.

The Contra Costa Public Health Department is investigating and says there is no current risk to the general public.
