School fundraiser

LORDSTOWN

Lordstown schools invite alumni back to the high school for the Dec. 22 boys basketball game, distribution of bricks from the recently demolished Lordstown school and a fundraiser.

The district will join the village to raise funds through a dinner and craft show from 4 to 6:30 p.m. to learn how much it will cost to repair the high school pool. Dinner choices are ham, pork chops, chicken and sausage and peppers and include sides, salad and beverage. Cost is $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens, $8 for students. Bricks will be distributed from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Injured owl rescued

LIBERTY

Township firefighters rescued a different kind of bird Thanksgiving Day. According to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, firefighters were called to Warner Road to help an owl that had been struck by a car. The department cared for the bird until Birds in Flight Sanctuary in Warren rescued it. Sanctuary Director Heather Merritt said in spite of eye and neurological damage, the owl is doing well.

Safe sitter course

LISBON

Columbiana County Health Department, 7360 state Route 45, is offering a safe sitter course taught by Akron Children’s Hospital from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 29. It is nationally recognized for boys and girls age 11 to 16. They will learn how to handle minor emergencies, life-saving techniques, age-appropriate activities for kids, safety and security precautions, basic child care skills and how to manage earnings. Cost is $30 and includes lunch and snacks.

Students will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course. Registration is limited. Call 330-424-0272, ext. 114, to register.

New Castle suicide

NEW CASTLE

A man shot and killed himself Saturday morning after threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend. According to a report, city police responded to a domestic disturbance on Marshall Avenue. Reports said Troy Addy, 42, of New Castle, had forced his way into his ex-girlfriend’s home, put a gun to her head and threatened to kill her. Addy fled, threatening to kill any officers who followed. The department’s Special Response Team was then called to a South Jefferson Street home for a barricaded gunman. When they entered the home, they found Addy dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
