Celebrate Short Fiction Day
Space is still available for area fiction writers who want to be part of the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day. The annual literary event is scheduled for Dec. 21 from 6-9 p.m. at Courtyard Square, located at 645 E. State Street in Salem. The public event, now in its third year, provides local writers with the opportunity to share their work with area fans, participants and other authors able to sell their own books during the event. A limited number of spaces at $10 each are available for those authors who aren’t reading but would like to make their books available for sale. Sellers must bring their own tables — no larger than 6 feet. Space reservations are required and must be paid in advance. Carlozzi annual funds drive
Carlozzi Financial Services is again helping local families in need this holiday season. The public is invited to join Carlozzi Financial Services and their clients to give a monetary donation to Second Harvest Food Bank. Monetary donations can be mailed to Carlozzi Financial Services, 831 Southwestern Run, Suite 1, Poland. For information, visit www.CarlozziFinancialServices.com. Second Harvest Food Bank distributed 10.4 million pounds of food in 2015 in the tri-county area. Last year, Carlozzi Financial Services collected $1,225 in monetary donations. Mark Carlozzi is hoping that this year will be even greater.
Boardman Park Christmas events
Create a new family tradition by gathering your family and friends and coming out to Boardman’s Community Christmas on Dec. 4 from 4-6 p.m., to decorate your own family named tree, see Santa and enjoy Holiday music. Beginning at 4 p.m., bring some natural decorations and decorate one of the park’s pine trees. Reserve your tree by calling the park office at 330-726-8105, or e-mailing Angela at angela@boardmanpark.com. Santa will be arriving by fire truck at 4:20 p.m. Be sure to bring your camera and take a picture with Santa in the gazebo. Then, head up to The St. James Meeting House and enjoy some cookies and hot chocolate while listening to Christmas music and caroling led by Tom Ruggieri and Linda Smrek and The Boardman High School Band beginning at 4:30 p.m. The lighting of the Community Christmas Tree will take place at 4:45 p.m. All activities are free and will take place near the gazebo and St. James Church. They will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Boardman Lions Club Food Pantry at Boardman Center Intermediate School.
Football alumni social
Calling all Cards, past, present and future. The MVR will host Mooney players and fans from the past six decades as they celebrate the weekend together with their family on Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. There will be a 50/50 raffle and autograph collection for unique Mooney Auction gifts.
CMHS launches giving Tuesday initiative
CMHS will make a substantial donation to the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley on behalf of all Lumen Christi 8th Graders in the Youngstown Diocese on Nov. 29. Other charitable endeavors involving the Mooney Family will take place throughout the day.
Chili Cook-off to be Nov. 26
The annual Chili Cook-off during the Ohio State and Michigan football game will be on Nov. 26. Doors will open two hours prior to game, and the public is encouraged to attend. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door for $25. There will be food, refreshments, door prizes, chili judging and fun, as well as the greatest rivalry in college football. The event will take place in the YSC main hall, located at 1735 W. South Range Road (Route 165) in North Lima. Attendees are encouraged to bring their best chili recipe for sampling and judging. The Youngstown Shrine Club’s membership works to promote and provide support to the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children in North America through donations and promotional events. Shriner Hospitals treat children who have orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate. Advanced care is provided in a family-centered environment that is focused on maximizing a child’s quality of life regardless of the families’ ability to pay.
Read to Roxie
Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International at the Poland library on Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This is for children in grades 1-4.
Wreaths of Remembrance
The old Poland Village Graveyard adjoining the Poland Presbyterian Church will again be the site of a Wreaths of Remembrance Ceremony on Dec. 3. The Poland Village Hine Fund Committee is sponsoring the event. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and will involve the placement of a pine wreath at the headstone of each of the veterans buried in the graveyard. There are 14 veterans of the Revolutionary War, 13 from the War of 1812 and 10 Civil War veterans buried in the graveyard. Veterans from the Poland American Legion Post and area Scouts will participate in the observance. The public is invited to attend.
ABWA Christmas celebration
On Nov. 21, the three chapters (Mill Creek Chapter, Tri-Gold Chapter and Youngstown Charter Chapter) will meet at A La Cart for their annual Christmas celebration. Welcome begins at 6 p.m. and a sit down dinner will follow at 6:30 p.m. The menu will consist of your choice of Swiss chicken, stuffed pork chops or stuffed flounder, along with mashed potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, cup of wedding soup, rolls, butter, coffee, tea and dessert. The cost will be $21. Reservations must be made by calling Shirley Pappagallo at 330-270-9779, no later than Dec. 4. Entertainment for the evening will be Judy Conti’s Dancing Divas and contributions will be collected for the Beatitude House as the charity and an optional gift exchange will be held for those interested. The public is welcomed. Join for an enjoyable evening together and see what American Business Women’s Association is all about. There will be no business meetings at this event.
Friends of the Poland librtary to meet on Dec. 6
The Friends of the Poland Library will meet on Dec. 6 at the Poland library. Coffee Hour will be at 9:30 a.m. with the program and business meeting to follow at 10 a.m. The program will be “Greystone (the Arms Museum), Through the Years” by Lea Mollman. Hostesses will be June Deeley, Mary Jane Pavelko and Ann Trefethern. Donations of books, magazines, CDs and DVDs are accepted at each meeting for the Poland Friends book cart. The meeting is open to the public. New members are welcome. Membership dues are $10 per year.
Newcomers group to meet
Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will be having its pre-Thanksgiving luncheon at Johnnie’s in Boardman on Nov. 16 at 11:30 a.m. They will celebrate the season and what Thanksgiving means to members. The program will be from the YMCA-what they have available for the community. They will be specifically discussing their programs on exercise and the importance of that aspect in remaining healthy. They will also be meeting for Book Club on Nov. 17, where they will be discussing “Journey to Munich,” which is a mystery and deals with some of the issues in the late 1930’s with Nazi Germany. Roundtowners will be meeting in the evening of Nov. 30. They will also be celebrating the holiday season on Dec. 14 with a luncheon, also at Johnnie’s at 11:30 a.m. Also happening in December will be the Needlework Group, Movie Club, Roundtowners and Birthday Club. Blue Christmas service
The holidays are generally a joyous time, but the loss of a loved one, a beloved pet or a life-changing situation can make them shine less bright. Harbor Light Hospice, Shepherd of the Valley and Lane Funeral Home invite you to their Blue Christmas, a service to offer support, healing and encouragement during the holidays on Dec. 6 at 6 p.m., with registration and refreshments starting at 5:30 p.m. They will be reflecting and remembering that which has lessened the glow this time of year. GA to meet
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
Poland Lions sponsor blanket drive
The Poland Lions Club is sponsoring a Blanket of Kindness drive Nov. 1-30. The group is collecting new and gently used blankets and comforters in sizes twin, full and queen for those children and families in need. Consider donating a blanket to help those in need in your community keep warm this winter. Blanket donation drop-off locations are Poland Methodist Church, Poland Home Savings, Wittenauer’s Cafe, Farmers National Bank, Town and Country Dry Cleaners, and Hair Together Salon, located at 5500 Market Street in Boardman (across from Market Street School). A children’s holiday journey
Participate and explore the true meaning of this special season at the Poland library on Nov. 26 at 10 a.m. This festive performance by Learning Station will share a heartwarming, celebratory message of caring, sharing and joyful cheer. Join Don Monopoli and celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. A treat for the entire family. No reservations are needed.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library at 10 a.m. every Wednesday in November. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Trim a tree for November
Decorate an ornament for the all-seasons tree at the Poland library during library hours in November. This is for children of all ages.
Yoga class
Friends of PLYMC is sponsoring a Yoga Class every Wednesday in the Poland library meeting room from 5-6 p.m. Pay as you attend at $10 per session.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit
The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
