Blue Christmas service

On Nov. 27 at 2:30 p.m., Canfield United Methodist Church, located at 27 S. Broad Street in Canfield, will host a Blue Christmas Service for all those in the community who are experiencing distress or loss this holiday season. The service includes singing, prayer, a message and anointing for healing. People of all faiths and communities are welcome to attend. For more information, contact Rev. Chicken dinner to be Dec. 1

Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield, is having a drive through chicken dinner on Dec. 1 from 4 p.m. until sold out. The cost is $8 and the menu includes stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, gravy. green beans and a brownie.

Sights and sounds of Christmas

On Dec. 4, Canfield United Methodist Church will host “The Sights and Sounds of Christmas,” a unique Christmas experience for students (pre-school to age 21) in our community with special needs. CUMC will offer a Christmas experience that is welcoming and accessible to all multiple disability students, The program will be a multi-sensory Christmas experience including a nativity dress up, farm animal petting, cookie decorating and tasting, music making and sensory toy playing. The program will begin at 3 p.m. and is open to area students with multiple disabilities. The programs will focus on experiencing the love of God and the Christmas story through the use of our five senses. The program is designed by a group of educators who are part of the CUMC congregation. If you would like any further information about the services, call the church at 330-533-9801.

Celebrate Short Fiction Day

Space is still available for area fiction writers who want to be part of the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day. The annual literary event is scheduled for Dec. 21 from 6-9 p.m. at Courtyard Square, located at 645 E. State Street in Salem. The public event, now in its third year, provides local writers with the opportunity to share their work with area fans, participants and other authors able to sell their own books during the event. A limited number of spaces at $10 each are available for those authors who aren’t reading but would like to make their books available for sale. Sellers must bring their own tables — no larger than 6 feet. Space reservations are required and must be paid in advance. Boardman Park Christmas events

Create a new family tradition by gathering your family and friends and coming out to Boardman’s Community Christmas on Dec. 4 from 4-6 p.m., to decorate your own family named tree, see Santa and enjoy Holiday music. Beginning at 4 p.m., bring some natural decorations and decorate one of the park’s pine trees. Reserve your tree by calling the park office at 330-726-8105, or e-mailing Angela at angela@boardmanpark.com. Santa will be arriving by fire truck at 4:20 p.m. Be sure to bring your camera and take a picture with Santa in the gazebo. Then, head up to The St. James Meeting House and enjoy some cookies and hot chocolate while listening to Christmas music and caroling led by Tom Ruggieri and Linda Smrek and The Boardman High School Band beginning at 4:30 p.m. The lighting of the Community Christmas Tree will take place at 4:45 p.m. All activities are free and will take place near the gazebo and St. James Church. They will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Boardman Lions Club Food Pantry at Boardman Center Intermediate School.

Football alumni social

Calling all Cards, past, present and future. The MVR will host Mooney players and fans from the past six decades as they celebrate the weekend together with their family on Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. There will be a 50/50 raffle and autograph collection for unique Mooney Auction gifts.

CMHS launches giving Tuesday initiative

CMHS will make a substantial donation to the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley on behalf of all Lumen Christi 8th Graders in the Youngstown Diocese on Nov. 29. Other charitable endeavors involving the Mooney Family will take place throughout the day.

Grab and go craft for November

Make a craft to take home at the Canfield library during library hours in November. This event is for children of all ages.

Chili Cook-off today

The annual Chili Cook-off during the Ohio State and Michigan football game will be on Nov. 26. Doors will open two hours prior to game, and the public is encouraged to attend. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door for $25. There will be food, refreshments, door prizes, chili judging and fun, as well as the greatest rivalry in college football. The event will take place in the YSC main hall, located at 1735 W. South Range Road (Route 165) in North Lima. Attendees are encouraged to bring their best chili recipe for sampling and judging. The Youngstown Shrine Club’s membership works to promote and provide support to the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children in North America through donations and promotional events. Shriner Hospitals treat children who have orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate. Advanced care is provided in a family-centered environment that is focused on maximizing a child’s quality of life regardless of the families’ ability to pay.

Gotta move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in November at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, and talk and play.

Toys for Tots at Kennsington

Kennsington Golf Club and CTW Development Corp. have teamed up with the local U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program for its annual toy drive, which is going on now through Dec. 8. Kennsington, located in Canfield’s Westford Lifestyle Community, will be collecting new, unwrapped toys for the organization to give to local children this holiday season. In addition, anyone who donates a toy will receive a certificate for 9 holes of golf, courtesy of the course. In past years, Kennsington has been one of the chapter’s top contributors and hopes to continue the streak.

Tales and talk for 2’s & 3’s

Join the Canfield library every Tuesday in November at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

Softball boosters shopping trip

The Canfield Softball Boosters are organizing a shopping trip to New York City and you can come too. The bus will depart from Canfield High School at 11 p.m. on Dec. 9 and arrive into NYC by 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 10. The bus will stay with the group throughout the day, making stops at Rockefeller Center, Freedom Tower and 9/11 Memorial, Union Square and Times Square, as well as other places of interest. Stay with the bus, or enjoy the time on your own. You will depart at 11 p.m. and arrive back at Canfield High School by Sunday morning. The cost is $159 per person and must be prepaid. All passengers aged 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Chair yoga is sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC. Pay as you attend at $10 per class. You should dress comfortably. Class will meet the first Friday of every month at the Canfield library at 10 a.m. This class is for adults.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit

The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
