State EPA searches Market Street building, some in protective suits

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

The state EPA Tuesday served a search warrant at a South Side building.

However, the agency, through a spokesman, would not say what they were looking for, other than whatever is in the building is “not dangerous.”

Despite that statement, however, a reporter who was on the scene as agents and workers were on the property was told to move off the property. He was not given an explanation why.

The state Bureau of Criminal Identification also assisted the EPA in serving the warrant at 25251/2 Market St., behind McDonald’s Restaurant. Officials at the scene also refused to comment, directing calls to Columbus to the EPA’s Public Information Center.

Spokesman James Lee said he could only confirm the warrant and that nothing dangerous was at the building. He would not say what was found or what was being sought.

Workers could be seen going through tractor-trailers that were filled with trash bags, and they also went inside the building and took out several barrels. Some workers who went inside were wearing environmental suits.

The building’s owner is listed as Budd Brothers. A phone number for the owner could not be found.
