Niles man refuses public defender, arraignment pushed back a week

A Niles man charged with attempted murder and other charges accusing him of shooting his female companion at their home Aug. 28, refused to be arraigned Tuesday until he has an attorney.

Clair D. Enlow, 54, of Battles Avenue in Niles, is charged with two counts of felonious assault and single counts of attempted murder, felony domestic violence and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

A woman, 43, of the Battles address, called police at 1 a.m. Aug. 28, saying she had been shot. Police found her lying across the open front door’s threshold with gunshot wounds.

She was transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where she underwent surgery.

Enlow fled in a car and was arrested on Interstate 79 in Greenwood, W.Va., that same day. He remained in the regional jail in Greenwood until his extradition could be arranged.

He did not arrive in the Trumbull County Jail until last Friday.

In court Tuesday, Enlow refused to allow an attorney with the Ohio Public Defender’s Office serve as his attorney for his arraignment hearing, so it has been rescheduled for Tuesday.

Judge Andrew Logan did set Enlow’s bond at $250,000.
