Firefighter, writer elected to SWCE board

YOUNGSTOWN

Sara Greier of Green Township and Kimberly P. Urig of Canfield have been elected to three-year terms on the board of supervisors of the Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District.

The election for the terms, which begin in January, was Thursday at the SWCD office here.

Greier has been a trustee of the Mahoning County Farm Bureau for the past six years and is a volunteer Beaver Township firefighter and emergency medical technician.

Urig is a freelance writer with a nationally recognized green-living blog, “Our Daily Green,” and an assistant speech and debate coach at Cardinal Mooney High School.

HazMat training

YOUNGSTOWN

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, the Mahoning County HazMat Team will conduct a training exercise near Slippery Rock Pavilion in Mill Creek Park, park officials announced. The training is a collaboration between the team and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and Marathon Oil.

Officials from those organizations will be trained for handling emergencies, such as hazardous substance spills entering streams such as Mill Creek and the park lakes along it.

The HazMat Team recently accepted a $4,200 grant from Marathon Petroleum Corp. of Findlay to help the team buy equipment for cleanup of petroleum product spills that might occur at Marathon or other facilities in the county.

Along with the grant, Marathon agreed to enter into cooperative training with the HazMat Team and local firefighters concerning spill response.

Drug charges

YOUNGSTOWN

Police reports said a man arrested Thursday evening after responding to a call of an overdose appeared to be unconscious for several hours before he was revived.

Officers were called about 7:30 p.m. to a home in the 2700 block of Julian Avenue. When they arrived, they found Anthony Girardi, 30, of Julian Avenue, face down on a bathroom floor. He was revived by paramedics.

Reports said officers found crack cocaine and a crack pipe in the bedroom. Girardi was charged with possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he has a police hold.

Reports said it appeared Girardi had been on the floor for some time because of the condition of the skin on his face where it had made contact with the floor.

Weapons charge

YOUNGSTOWN

Police serving a search warrant Thursday arrested a man on a weapons charge.

Reports said detectives and members of the Mahoning Valley Law Enforcement Task Force pulled over a car driven by James Hall, 24, of Atlantic Street SE in Warren at about10:40 a.m. at Belmont and Emerson avenues. Officers could see a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun sticking out of the driver’s seat, reports said.

Hall told police he bought the gun a few weeks ago in Youngstown for $250. He was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and booked into the Mahoning County jail on that charge and a warrant from Boardman police for misdemeanor domestic violence.

Police seek suspect

STONEBORO, PA.

State Police in Mercer are seeking tips from the public concerning the whereabouts of Andrew Thomas DeLucia Jr., 40, who is wanted on multiple felony warrants related to a clandestine methamphetamine lab in his Railroad Street apartment.

Police said they found the meth lab, a large bag of marijuana and drug paraphernalia when they searched the apartment last month.

DeLucia is facing charges of operating a methamphetamine lab, illegal dumping of methamphetamine waste, causing or risking a catastrophe, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Prairie event

Slippery Rock, PA.

Jennings Environmental Education Center, 2951 Prospect Road, invites the public to a 90-minute, indoor event at 2 p.m. Sunday to discover life below the prairie. The prairie at Jennings is a unique ecosystem. It is the only managed and protected prairie in Pennsylvania, and the eastern-most prairie in the United States. The prairie exists due to a combination of geology, historical climate and modern management. No registration is required.

Vienna hit-skip suspect hospitalized

VIENNA

A suspect is in the hospital after reportedly crashing near Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna Township late Friday after an alleged hit-and-skip, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, 21 WFMJ-TV reports.

An officer fired at least one gunshot during the incident, WFMJ said. As of press time, names of the officer and suspect were not available.

Agents with the Ohio Bureau of Investigation arrived at the scene.

Power outage

Dozens of people lost power in Springfield Township late Friday after a driver crashed into a utility pole, according to First Energy Ohio.

Power was expected to be restored by 1:30 a.m., the company’s website reported.
