CANFIELD

Nick Deal, a South Range High School senior, is hosting a 5K run in support of Henry “Hank” Marsilio, a high-school parent who recently has been diagnosed with leukemia.

The race will take place at 1 p.m., with check-in at 11:15 a.m. Sunday at South Range High School, 11300 Columbiana-Canfield Road. Registration cost is $15 or $25 with a T-shirt and wristband. Online registration also is available through Second Sole of Boardman. All proceeds will be donated to the Marsilio family.

The event will include cider, doughnuts, pizza, coffee and hot chocolate. Call 330-398-3000 with questions.

Postcards for troops

Home Savings invites the public to send the troops 10,000 holiday postcards this holiday season. Postcards are available at all Home Savings retail branch offices, and this effort is not limited to bank customers.

The goal is to get all 10,000 cards personally signed by people in the communities before Thanksgiving.

The Holiday Mail for Heroes program is the effort of the American Red Cross.

Prostrate screening

Free prostate screening for men older than 40 who are uninsured or underinsured is offered from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Midlothian Free Health Clinic inside First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave.

Gun, drug charges

A Stiles Street man was in the Mahoning County jail on $25,000 bond Friday after his arraignment in municipal court on gun and drug charges. Reports said a trooper with the Canfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol pulled over a car driven by Ronnie Edwards, 24, for speeding on Interstate 680 about 2:10 a.m. Friday.

Edwards did not have a license or registration, and the trooper saw an empty gun holster in the car, so the car was searched. Reports said underneath the driver’s seat the trooper found a loaded 9 mm handgun, an unloaded .32-caliber revolver and two bags of white powder that were determined after testing to be methamphetamine and heroin.

Drill-team contest

YOUNGSTOWN

East High School’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp. swept the drill-team contest earlier this month at the Kenmore Drill Competition near Akron. More than 200 students from throughout the state competed in the contest, which includes both individual and team events.

The East Panther Battalion’s junior TyShawn Rutledge and seniors Aaron Santos and Malik Stoffer placed first, second and third, respectively, in the individual knockout event.

The drill team also earned first place, and the East Raider team won second. The team’s color guard and academic challenge divisions each earned third place, and the Panther Battalion earned third place overall.

The team is led by Army instructor Master Sgt. Douglas Moon, retired. Throughout the school year, the Panther Battalion participates in activities including American Red Cross blood drives, parades and community service projects.
