Austintown Fitch High School hosted its biannual Senior Citizens Dinner on Oct. 26 for senior citizens in the Austintown community.

The long-standing event was coordinated by Stephanie Brown, an Austintown Board Administrative Assistant, and Brittany Bueno, Community Engagement Specialist for the Mahoning County Educational Service Center. Fitch hosts the event in the spring and in the fall.

Students, faculty members and board members from Austintown City Schools volunteer to serve dinners to the senior citizens. Students from Key Club, Interact and National Honor Society spend the evening at school helping with the dinner.

“We sent fliers out to churches in the area. It’s just for Austintown residents. We also sent out fliers to our senior center and a couple banks,” said Brown.

Austintown residents came from all over the community to spend time with their friends and have the chance to get back into the high school. The dinner is hosted to show an appreciation for the Austintown community.

“I really enjoy giving back,” said senior Tiffany Aliberti, “I’ll definitely do it again, it’s a great experience.”

The students enjoy being able to speak with the senior citizens and learn more about them while serving them a meal. Around 250 guests attended the event.

Brown and Bueno worked with Tascin Brooks, Food Service Director, and the rest of the food service staff to create a meal for the seniors.

“Sometimes I think our kids get more out of it than the senior citizens because the kids have the opportunity to serve, give back and see the experience of our Austintown community,” said Superintendent Vince Colaluca.

The next Senior Citizens Dinner will be in the spring of 2017.
