REcaps of Wednesday’s College Basketball games
MEN
Kent State 93, Mississippi Valley State 63
KENT
Jimmy Hall scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Kent State beat Mississippi Valley State. Hall was 7 of 12 from the field and 9 of 11 from the free-throw line for the Golden Flash (2-0). Jaylin Walker added 14 points and Deon Edwin had 11. The team averaged 44.6 percent shooting from the field, 75 percent from the line and outrebounded MSVU 54-27. Before the game, Kent State players ventured into the home crowd and — in a show of racial unity — each brought a fan of a different race courtside to stand with them for the national anthem.
No. 6 Indiana 100, UMass Lowell 78
BLOOMINGTON, IND.
James Blackmon Jr. made five 3-pointers, scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Robert Johnson added 16 points, as No. 6 Indiana sailed to a victory over UMass Lowell. Blackmon made four 3-pointers and scored 20 of his 23 points in the first half of Indiana’s regular season home opener. The Hoosiers (2-0) were playing their first game since beating No. 3 Kansas in the Armed Forces Classic and had to overcome a slow, sloppy start. Indiana outscored UMass Lowell (1-2) 32-15 over the final 8:24 of the first half.
No. 21 Rhode Island 79, Brown 72
KINGSTON, R.I.
Jared Terrell scored 18 points and E.C Matthews added 17 as No. 21 Rhode Island held off upset-minded Brown in Round Two of the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off. Hassan Martin added 12 points and Kuran Iverson had 11 as the Rams (3-0) defeated the Bears (1-2) for the 19th time in their last 21 meetings. Rhode Island built a 36-21 lead late in the first half but Steven Spieth keyed a rally that enabled the Bears to pull within 41-33 at halftime.
WOMEN
No. 7 Ohio State 96, Cleveland State 78
COLUMBUS
Kelsey Mitchell scored 31 points to lead four teammates in double figures and No. 7 Ohio State beat Cleveland State. The Buckeyes (2-1) won despite poor 3-point shooting from everyone except the junior All-American guard. Early in the fourth quarter her teammates were 0 for 11 from beyond the arc while she was 7 for 13. Finally, Sierra Calhoun hit a 3-pointer as Ohio State finished 8 for 27 from 3-point range.
No. 5 Louisville 91, Middle Tennessee 72
MURFREESBORO, TENN.
Mariya Moore scored 27 points, and the fifth-ranked Louisville Cardinals never trailed beating Middle Tennessee. This was Louisville’s first visit to Middle Tennessee since 2008, and the Cardinals had little trouble improving to 5-1 in this series. Ciera Johnson opened with a layup for the Cardinals (3-0), and Alex Johnson hit a short jumper to tie it up at 2. That was as close as Middle Tennessee (0-2) from Conference USA would get as Louisville shot 67 percent taking a 22-9 lead after the first quarter.
No. 6 Maryland 106, Maryland-Eastern Shore 61
COLLEGE PARK, MD.
Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 19 points and No. 6 Maryland routed Maryland-Eastern Shore. Maryland (2-0) got another big game from two of its highly touted freshmen, Kaila Charles and Destiny Slocum, both of whom got their second straight start. Slocum had 10 points, hitting three 3-pointers. Charles scored 14 points. Another freshman Jenna Staiti scored all 10 of her points in the second half. Maryland shot 45 of 80 (56 percent) from the field and scored 22 points off 12 turnovers.
No. 8 Texas 98, Houston Baptist 46
AUSTIN, TEXAS
Freshman Joyner Holmes scored 22 points to lead No. 8 Texas past Houston Baptist. Among the top recruits in the country, Holmes went 8 of 17 from the field with nine rebounds and three blocks in 22 minutes. Brooke McCarty had 16 points and Ariel Atkins and Jada Underwood each scored 11 for Texas (1-1). Lauren Calver led Houston Baptist (0-2) with 11 points, followed by Amanda Johnson with 10.
No. 10 Mississippi State 66, Tulane 49
BILOXI, MISS.
Victoria Vivians scored 17 points, Breanna Richardson added 11 and No. 10 Mississippi State cruised past Tulane. The game wasn’t pretty early as both teams struggled to score points, but when the Bulldogs (3-0) began to find their shot in the second quarter, Tulane (1-1) stayed cold. The Green Wave ended up going scoreless in the final 4:36 of the second quarter, which helped Mississippi State take a 36-16 advantage into halftime.
No. 16 Oklahoma 68, Arkansas-Little Rock 58
NORMAN, OKLA.
Peyton Little made three 3-pointers and scored 17 points, Vionise Pierre-Louis had her second career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, and No. 16 Oklahoma held off Arkansas-Little Rock. Little Rock pulled to 56-52 early in the fourth quarter on Sharde Collins’s basket, but that’s as close as the Trojans would get the rest of the way. T’ona Edwards scored four points during Oklahoma’s 6-0 run to take a 10-point lead with 4:26 left.
No. 22 Miami 80, Charlotte 46
CORAL GABLES, FLA.
Jessica Thomas made three 3-pointers and scored 18 points, Adrienne Motley added three 3s and 12 points, and No. 22 Miami beat Charlotte. The Hurricanes were 10 of 19 from distance. Miami made its first four shots of the game — all from 3-point range — and had a 14-3 lead after just 3:23 of play. Miami extended its lead to 30-10 at the end of the first quarter and it was 47-20 at halftime.
