Aging agency warns of phone scam

NILES

The Ohio Department of Aging is alerting Northeast Ohio residents of a potential phone scam asking to schedule a home visit.

It’s a scam in which an unsolicited caller identifies herself as representing the “State of Ohio aging program.” The caller asks for contact information and may attempt to schedule a home visit. These calls do not originate from the Ohio Department of Aging.

If such a call is received, hang up. If personal information has been provided or a home visit scheduled in response to one of these calls, contact local law enforcement immediately.

The state contracts with local Area Agencies on Aging to link people with programs and help start home services. The state would refer callers to the appropriate AAA.

Residents are urged to never give out information over the phone and to not let anyone in the home. If an appointment with someone from Area Agency on Aging 11 has been scheduled, all employees are required to have proper identification.

Call the office first to check whether someone from the agency is scheduled to come out for a home visit by calling 330-505-2300.

Man pleads not guilty to assault

AUSTINTOWN

A township man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a misdemeanor assault charge he faces after being accused of attacking a 17-year-old girl.

Michael Deiley, 24, of Raccoon Road, appeared in Mahoning County Area Court here for arraignment on the charge that stems from an incident reported Tuesday afternoon at Hot Head Burritos on Mahoning Avenue.

The victim reported to police Deiley jumped into the back seat of her vehicle and grabbed her. After she left the vehicle to get away from him, Deiley reportedly shoved her against the vehicle, an account that a witness also gave to police.

Deiley posted his $1,250 bond. He is scheduled to be back in court Dec. 12.

Food for veterans

Disabled American Veterans Chapter 2 will be passing out a turkey and a bag of canned goods to veterans for Thanksgiving from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at 110 Westchester Drive.

The Beaver Township Police Department’s next Crime Watch meeting will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 22 at Shepherd of the Valley, 9111 Sharrott Road. Township police officer Tracy Polak will be the guest speaker. Local crime statistics will be covered.

Holiday closing

Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission office at Oakhill Renaissance Place, 345 Oak Hill Ave., Suite 100, will be closed Nov. 24 and 25 in observance of Thanksgiving. The office will reopen at 8 a.m. Nov. 28.

NAACP election

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown branch of the NAACP will have its election of officers and at-large members of the executive committee Saturday at the branch offices inside the Cobbin Building, 1350 Fifth Ave., Suite 202.

The polls will be open from 2 to 7 p.m. To vote in a branch election, one must be a member in good standing of the branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People 30 days before the election. A form of identification is required.

Should a run-off election be necessary, that election will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Dec. 14.
