To learn more about scams that may be active in your area, or if you have questions about the authenticity of communications from people claiming to be utility representatives, contact your local police through the nonemergency telephone number, the Ohio Attorney General’s office at 800-282-0515, and/or contact the Federal Trade Commission.

Fuel leaks lead to Mazda recalling cars

Detroit

Mazda is recalling almost 70,000 RX-8 sports cars in the U.S. to fix possible fuel leaks that can cause fires.

The recall covers RX-8s from the 2004 through 2008 model years.

Mazda says the cars have fuel pump sealing rings that can crack when exposed to engine or exhaust heat. That can allow gasoline to escape, increasing the risk of a fire. Company documents filed with the government did not mention any fires or injuries.

Dealers will replace the sealing rings and add insulation to the fuel tank to keep heat away. Parts are not yet available. Owners will be notified of the recall and will get a second letter telling them when to take cars in for repairs.

NE Ohio county to vote on buying solar, wind power

CLEVELAND

County leaders in Cleveland are considering a 10-year power-purchase deal that includes buying power from a yet-to-be-built wind farm in Lake Erie.

The Cuyahoga County Council’s vote scheduled for Tuesday would lock in an agreement with Cleveland Public Power.

Some of the power would come from six wind turbines that are planned to be built in Lake Erie.

It would be the nation’s first offshore, fresh-water project. Plans call for the turbines to be operating by 2018.

NEW ORLEANS

Five Gulf states still seeking to restore their coastal waters and habitats after the devastating oil spill of 2010 will divvy up nearly $370 million for an array of projects that will create new wetlands, restore fisheries, aid sea turtles and more.

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation announced the grants Tuesday for Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida as those states strive to bounce back from one of the largest environmental disasters in history.
