South Side fires displaces family of 9, kills dog

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

A family of two parents and seven children was displaced by an 8:10 p.m. fire at 345 Garfield Street that killed the family’s dog and burned a firefighter.

None of the family members were home at the time. The home, which was probably a total loss, is between Hillman Avenue and Edwards Street on the South Side, said Youngstown Battalion Chief Charlie Smith.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

The home, built about 10 years ago, burned very hot, and one firefighter suffered burns to his ear and cheek while fighting the fire from inside the house, Smith said. The firefighter did not require hospitalization.
