Robert Vaughn, suave ‘Man from U.N.C.L.E.’ star, dies at 83

NEW YORK

Robert Vaughn, the debonair, Oscar-nominated actor whose many film roles were eclipsed by his hugely popular turn in television’s “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” has died. He was 83.

Vaughn died Friday morning after a brief battle with acute leukemia, according to his manager, Matthew Sullivan.

“The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” was an immediate hit, particularly with young people, when it debuted on NBC in 1964. It was part of an avalanche of secret agent shows (“I Spy,” “Mission: Impossible,” “Secret Agent”), spoofs (“Get Smart”), books (“The Spy Who Came in From the Cold”) and even songs (“Secret Agent Man”) inspired by the James Bond films.

Vaughn’s urbane superspy Napoleon Solo teamed with Scottish actor David McCallum’s Illya Kuryakin, a soft-spoken, Russian-born agent.

The pair, who had put aside Cold War differences for a greater good, worked together each week for the mysterious U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law and Enforcement) in combatting the international crime syndicate THRUSH.

Former Trump campaign manager leaves CNN network

NEW YORK

Corey Lewandowski, who served a stormy stint as a CNN commentator after being fired as Donald Trump’s campaign manager, has resigned from the network. His resignation Friday was effective immediately, said CNN’s Barbara Levin.

Lewandowski’s stay at CNN, which began only days after leaving the Trump campaign in June, stirred continued debate over whether political insiders hired as network on-air contributors are more loyal to the politicians they once worked for than the network that employs them and the audience it serves.

Media observers and even some CNN insiders were troubled by Lewandowski’s combative style on-air, by the fact that he was bound by a non-disclosure agreement limiting his ability to criticize Trump publicly, and all the more so when it was learned that he was continuing to receive severance payments from the campaign. The payments ended after the widespread criticism.
