1831: Former slave Nat Turner, who’d led a violent insurrection, is executed in Jerusalem, Va.

1918: Fighting in World War I ends as the Allies and Germany sign an armistice in the Forest of Compiegne.

1921: The remains of an unidentified American service member are interred in a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery in a ceremony presided over by President Warren G. Harding.

1942: During World War II, Germany completes its occupation of France.

2015: The world’s two biggest beer makers, AB InBev and SABMiller, announce they will join forces in a $107 billion merger to create a company that would produce almost a third of the world’s beer.

1991: Three Mahoning Valley state representatives – Ron Gerberry, Joseph Vukovich and June Lucas – say they oppose Gov. George Voinovich’s proposal for term limits for state legislators. Voters, they say, should be able to vote for or against candidates based on their performance, not their longevity.

Poland Township trustees authorize acting Police Chief Carl Massullo to pursue the possibility of the township contracting with the village of Poland for police services, which they believe could prove cheaper and more efficient than maintaining a township department.

Beaver Township trustees authorize a streetlight at the dark and dangerous intersection of Market Street and Calla Road, the site of numerous traffic accidents.

1976: A would-be armed robber confronted Linda Rafidi, an employee of the Warren Avenue Market in Warren, and her sister as they left the store. Miss Rafidi kicked him, then pulled a .32-caliber revolver and fired at him twice. The 22-year-old man is in St. Elizabeth Hospital.

Jackson-Milton Local Schools run out of money and close for the rest of the year. Students will face 28 make-up days in the new year.

The Western Reserve Transit Authority and Struthers reach a compromise agreement extending bus service to Struthers for three more months at the old subsidy rate.

1966: The Jackson Milton Board of Education authorizes its clerk to borrow $34,000 to meet operating expenses.

Carrying on a family tradition, Donald B. McKay is named president and chairman of the board of Home Savings & Loan Co. of Youngstown.

A six-acre site at the northeast corner of Raccoon and New roads is rezoned to allow construction of a shopping center.

1941: Youngstown City Council appropriates $13,743 realized by the city from the sale of street-car rails and paving brick on Wilson Avenue to pay for wage increases for street department workers.

Dr. Louis T. Evans, pastor of Hollywood Presbyterian Church, tells 500 people, most of them young folks, at the First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown that dictators like Hitler threaten to tear out religion by its roots, but they always fail.

Alumni of the former Dana Musical Institute discuss plans to fund a scholarship in memory of founder of William H. Dana and longtime president Lynn B. Dana Sr. now that the institute is part of Youngstown College.
