Open house kicks off food drive
A Dying Art Company, Legacy Dog Rescue and DogSmartz Unleashed are inviting the public to the DogSmartz Unleashed Giving Thanks open house on Nov. 12 from 3-5 p.m. Stop out and see the new positive dog training facility located in Poland, meet the trainers and staff, cuddle some local adorable pups looking for their forever homes, enjoy some sweet treats while you tour the new “digs” and maybe even learn a trick or two. Be sure to bring pet food item for donation to the Youngstown Pet Food Drive to help them kick off the collection and enter for a chance to win a free 12 inch by 12 inch custom painting from A Dying Art Company, Ltd. Keep itfor yourself or the perfect holiday gift. The Youngstown Pet Food Drive starts on Nov. 15 at four local businesses: Dar’s Dirty Dogs in Canfield, Om Yoga in Hubbard, Warren Harley Davidson in Warren and, of course, Dogsmartz Unleashed in Poland. The pounds are full and winter is always a hard time for families struggling to make ends meet. They want to be sure they have access to food and supplies so that no one has to make a tough decision. They want to keep families together and out of the pounds this winter and these local businesses are doing everything they can to really help the animal rescue community. All collection proceeds will benefit Legacy Dog Rescue and their rescue efforts in the Valley. Historical society meeting to be Nov. 15
The next regular meeting of the Poland Historical Society will take place on Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road (Route 224 and Struthers Road intersection) in Poland Township. “Following the Fowlers from Connecticut to Poland to Canfield” will be the topic of the program at 7:30 p.m. The presentation will begin with the story of the original Jonathan Fowler family in Guilford, Connecticut and will trace Fowler’s move to Poland in 1799. The program will be presented by society members Dave Smith, Larry Baughman and Ted Heineman.
Contra dance to be Nov. 12
The Western Reserve Contra Dance will take place from 7-9:30 p.m. on Nov. 12 at the Dublin Grange Hall, located at 6571 Fairground Boulevard in Canfield. The “contra” is a New England social dance with ever-changing partners and live traditional music by the band “One String Short.” A caller will teach each dance and guide the dancers. Dress is casual, beginners and all ages are welcome, partners are not required and new friends will be made. Admission is $8 and light refreshments will be served. Short Fiction Day
Space is still available for area fiction writers who want to be part of the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day. The annual literary event is scheduled for Dec. 21 from 6-9 p.m. at Courtyard Square, located at 645 E. State Street in Salem. The public event, now in its third year, provides local writers with the opportunity to share their work with area fans, participants and other authors able to sell their own books during the event. A limited number of spaces at $10 each are available for those authors who aren’t reading but would like to make their books available for sale. Sellers must bring their own tables — no larger than 6 feet. Space reservations are required and must be paid in advance. Carlozzi annual funds drive
Carlozzi Financial Services is again helping local families in need this holiday season. The public is invited to join Carlozzi Financial Services and their clients to give a monetary donation to Second Harvest Food Bank. Monetary donations can be mailed to Carlozzi Financial Services, 831 Southwestern Run, Suite 1, Poland. For information, visit www.CarlozziFinancialServices.com. Second Harvest Food Bank distributed 10.4 million pounds of food in 2015 in the tri-county area. Last year, Carlozzi Financial Services collected $1,225 in monetary donations. Mark Carlozzi is hoping that this year will be even greater.
Friendly Squares monthly dance

Boardman Park Christmas events
Create a new family tradition by gathering your family and friends and coming out to Boardman’s Community Christmas, to decorate your own family named tree, see Santa and enjoy Holiday music. Beginning at 4 p.m., bring some natural decorations and decorate one of the park’s pine trees. Santa will be arriving by fire truck at 4:20 p.m. Be sure to bring your camera and take a picture with Santa in the gazebo. Then, head up to The St. James Meeting House and enjoy some cookies and hot chocolate while listening to Christmas music and caroling led by Tom Ruggieri and Linda Smrek and The Boardman High School Band beginning at 4:30 p.m. The lighting of the Community Christmas Tree will take place at 4:45 p.m. All activities are free and will take place near the gazebo and St. James Church. They will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Boardman Lions Club Food Pantry at Boardman Center Intermediate School.
Fast and furriest
Join in on Nov. 12 for the fourth annual Fast and Furriest 5K Run / Walk at Waterworth Memorial Park-Pavilion 8 off Superior Ave in Salem. There will be a 500-meter dash with your dog at 8:45 a.m., followed by the 5k at 9:15 a.m. All proceeds from the race will benefit Legacy Dog Rescue. LDR is a 501c3 non-profit animal welfare organization helping dogs in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties and surrounding areas. Blue Christmas service
The holidays are generally a joyous time, but the loss of a loved one, a beloved pet or a life-changing situation can make them shine less bright. Harbor Light Hospice, Shepherd of the Valley and Lane Funeral Home invite you to their Blue Christmas, a service to offer support, healing and encouragement during the holidays on Dec. 6 at 6 p.m., with registration and refreshments starting at 5:30 p.m. They will be reflecting and remembering that which has lessened the glow this time of year. GA to meet
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
ABWA celebration
On Dec. 13, the three chapters (Mill Creek Chapter, Tri-Gold Chapter and Youngstown Charter Chapter) will meet at A La Cart for their annual Christmas celebration. Welcome begins at 6 p.m. and a sit down dinner will follow at 6:30 p.m. The menu will consist of your choice of Swiss chicken, stuffed pork chops or stuffed flounder, along with mashed potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, cup of wedding soup, rolls, butter, coffee, tea and dessert. Entertainment for the evening will be Judy Conti’s Dancing Divas and contributions will be collected for the Beatitude House as the charity and an optional gift exchange will be held for those interested. Poland Lions sponsor blanket drive
The Poland Lions Club is sponsoring a Blanket of Kindness drive Nov. 1-30. The group is collecting new and gently used blankets and comforters in sizes twin, full and queen for those children and families in need. Consider donating a blanket to help those in need in your community keep warm this winter. Blanket donation drop-off locations are Poland Methodist Church, Poland Home Savings, Wittenauer’s Cafe, Farmers National Bank, Town and Country Dry Cleaners, and Hair Together Salon, located at 5500 Market Street in Boardman (across from Market Street School). Lions club hosts poster contest
The Poland Lions Club is sponsoring the Lions International Peace Poster Contest to students ages 11, 12 and 13 as of the date of Nov. 15. The theme this year is “A Celebration of Peace.“ Artwork must be no smaller than 13 inches by 20 inches and no bigger than 20 inches by 24 inches. Each entry must be the work of one student and original work of the student. An entry pack may be obtained at their school or by contacting the Poland Lions at 330-360-3641. A look at previous winning posters and a video about the contest can be found at the International Web site of www.lionsclubs.org. The local deadline for poster submission is Nov. 10.
A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving
Good grief! It’s Thanksgiving! Join the Poland library on Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m. as they celebrate with the traditional Charlie Brown Thanksgiving dinner: jelly beans, pretzels, toast and more. You’ll play games, make a craft and have some treats. This is for children of all ages.
A children’s holiday journey
Participate and explore the true meaning of this special season at the Poland library on Nov. 26 at 10 a.m. This festive performance by Learning Station will share a heartwarming, celebratory message of caring, sharing and joyful cheer. Join Don Monopoli and celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. A treat for the entire family. No reservations are needed.
Playtime at your library
Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Poland library on Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This event is for children ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library at 10 a.m. every Wednesday in November. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Macaroni and please
Join the Poland library on Nov. 17 at 10:30 a.m. for a special edition of Toddler Story Time. One-minute manners will be presented to youngsters, including “please and thank you,” “excuse me,” how to set the table and the proper way to eat soup. Includes developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children will receive a special place mat and must be accompanied by an adult.
Lego my library
Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Poland library on Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.
Read to Roxie
Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International at the Poland library on Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This is for children in grades 1-4.
Trim a tree for November
Decorate an ornament for the all-seasons tree at the Poland library during library hours in November. This is for children of all ages.
Yoga class
Friends of PLYMC is sponsoring a Yoga Class every Wednesday in the Poland library meeting room from 5-6 p.m. Pay as you attend at $10 per session.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit
The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
