In keeping with the Canfield High School tradition to honor athletes who have earned the right to compete at the state level, the school had a walk-through for sophomore golfer Hannah Keffler, sophomore tennis player Sydney Cianciola and senior tennis player Hannah Cianciola on Oct. 19.
Keffler earned a trip to Columbus to compete in the Division 1 Golf State Championship tournament on Ohio State University’s Grey Course on Oct. 21-22. Keffler earned her first varsity letter as a freshman, while also garnering all-conference first team honors.
“This is a huge accomplishment for Hannah to make as an individual in Division 1. She shot a stellar two over par at districts, which is a score of 74. Within the field, she tied for fifth among 96 players, which means she tied for first as an individual player,” said Diane McCall, Lady Cards golf coach.
The Ciancola sisters won the Division 1 title in doubles, earning them a trip to Mason, Ohio, to compete for state-level honors Oct. 21. As members of Coach Rob Stephens’ highly-successful school tennis program, Sydney won her first varsity letter last year as a freshman, while Hannah has lettered and been named all-conference and divisional Player of the Year in each of her three preceding seasons. She also earned All-Ohio honors in doubles tennis last year, playing with partner Ashley Kaleel.
“I am very proud of both Sydney and Hannah. They are playing very well and have a great shot this year,” Stephens said.
Both Sydney and Hannah said it helps to have their sister as a partner. They also appreciate all the support they have received.
“We would like to thank our parents and coaches for all their help and support. Especially for all their support for all four years of my tennis career,” Hannah said.
Escorted by the Canfield Cardinal, Keffler and the Cianciola sisters walked through the school, during which students, faculty and staff took a moment to gather outside their classrooms to give congratulate the state-bound athletes and give them their best wishes.
