Open house kicks off food drive
A Dying Art Company, Legacy Dog Rescue and DogSmartz Unleashed are inviting the public to the DogSmartz Unleashed Giving Thanks open house on Nov. 12 from 3-5 p.m. Stop out and see the new positive dog training facility located in Poland, meet the trainers and staff, cuddle some local adorable pups looking for their forever homes, enjoy some sweet treats while you tour the new “digs” and maybe even learn a trick or two. Be sure to bring pet food item for donation to the Youngstown Pet Food Drive to help them kick off the collection and enter for a chance to win a free 12 inch by 12 inch custom painting from A Dying Art Company, Ltd. The Youngstown Pet Food Drive starts on Nov. 15 at four local businesses: Dar’s Dirty Dogs in Canfield, Om Yoga in Hubbard, Warren Harley Davidson in Warren and, of course, Dogsmartz Unleashed in Poland. The pounds are full and winter is always a hard time for families struggling to make ends meet. They want to be sure they have access to food and supplies so that no one has to make a tough decision. Tap and jazz show
A cast of 40 Canfield High School students will perform tap dance and jazz numbers in an array of costumes as they present the musical “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas.” The curtain will go up on Nov. 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 20 at 2:30 p.m. in the Canfield High School auditorium. Tickets are available by calling the school ticket line at 330 702-7128, or can be purchased at the door. Adult tickets are $14 and students are $10. The production is recommended for the entire family.
Softball boosters shopping trip
The Canfield Softball Boosters are organizing a shopping trip to New York City and you can come too. The bus will depart from Canfield High School at 11 p.m. on Dec. 9 and arrive into NYC by 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 10. The bus will stay with the group throughout the day, making stops at Rockefeller Center, Freedom Tower and 9/11 Memorial, Union Square and Times Square, as well as other places of interest. Stay with the bus, or enjoy the time on your own. You will depart at 11 p.m. and arrive back at Canfield High School by Sunday morning. The cost is $159 per person and must be prepaid. All passengers aged 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Garden Club event
St. Michael Garden Guild presents an evening with Thomas Welsh, author and historian. Raise your glass to the best-laid tables of a bygone era, from the Mural Room to the 20th Century. Attendees will have the chance to win his autographed book “Classic Restaurants of Youngstown.” The free program will be Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Family Life Center, St. Michael’s Church in Canfield. Space is still available for area fiction writers who want to be part of the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day. The annual literary event is scheduled for Dec. 21 from 6-9 p.m. at Courtyard Square, located at 645 E. State Street in Salem. The public event, now in its third year, provides local writers with the opportunity to share their work with area fans, participants and other authors able to sell their own books during the event. A limited number of spaces at $10 each are available for those authors who aren’t reading but would like to make their books available for sale. Sellers must bring their own tables — no larger than 6 feet. Space reservations are required and must be paid in advance. The “contra” is a New England social dance with ever-changing partners and live traditional music by the band “One String Short.” A caller will teach each dance and guide the dancers. Dress is casual, beginners and all ages are welcome, partners are not required and new friends will be made. Admission is $8 and light refreshments will be served. Carlozzi annual funds drive
Carlozzi Financial Services is again helping local families in need this holiday season. The public is invited to join Carlozzi Financial Services and their clients to give a monetary donation to Second Harvest Food Bank. Monetary donations can be mailed to Carlozzi Financial Services, 831 Southwestern Run, Suite 1, Poland. For information, visit www.CarlozziFinancialServices.com. Second Harvest Food Bank distributed 10.4 million pounds of food in 2015 in the tri-county area. Last year, Carlozzi Financial Services collected $1,225 in monetary donations. Mark Carlozzi is hoping that this year will be even greater.
CVMS Pancreatic Cancer Awareness
Everyone has been touched in some way by cancer. Pancreatic Cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer as 75 percent of people diagnosed pass away within the first year of diagnosis. Students and staff at Canfield Village Middle School are hoping to raise awareness of this deadly diagnosis. November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and during the week of Nov. 14, CVMS is selling purple bead necklaces during all lunch periods for $1 each. In addition, Nov. 17 is World Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day and the school will have a purple out.
Gorant food drive
Gorant Chocolatier is “Lending a Hand to Stop Hunger” in the Mahoning Valley this holiday season by hosting their 2nd annual food drive. Starting Nov. 1, customers can donate non-perishable food items and receive 5 percent off their purchase for each item donated (up to 25 percent). The food drive continues through Nov. 17. Participating locations include their Boardman Factory location (8301 Market Street), and their Canfield/Westford Commons location (4259 Boardman-Canfield Road) The most needed food items for this holiday season include boxed stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, canned yams, canned vegetables and gravy mix.

Boardman Park Christmas events
Create a new family tradition by gathering your family and friends and coming out to Boardman’s Community Christmas, to decorate your own family named tree, see Santa and enjoy Holiday music. Beginning at 4 p.m., bring some natural decorations and decorate one of the park’s pine trees. They will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Boardman Lions Club Food Pantry at Boardman Center Intermediate School.
Playtime at your library
Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Canfield library on Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This event is for children ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.
ABWA Christmas celebration
On Dec. 13, the three chapters (Mill Creek Chapter, Tri-Gold Chapter and Youngstown Charter Chapter) will meet at A La Cart for their annual Christmas celebration. Welcome begins at 6 p.m. and a sit down dinner will follow at 6:30 p.m. The menu will consist of your choice of Swiss chicken, stuffed pork chops or stuffed flounder, along with mashed potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, cup of wedding soup, rolls, butter, coffee, tea and dessert. Entertainment for the evening will be Judy Conti’s Dancing Divas and contributions will be collected for the Beatitude House as the charity and an optional gift exchange will be held for those interested. Gathering place event
There will be a Gathering Place event on Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. at the Lord of Life Church. The speaker will be a local counselor Kurt Beler and his topic will be stress. Lunch will be provided by the Woodlands at Hampton Woods. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that is held on the second Monday of the month every month. Canfield High School student is 2016 Outstanding Young Philanthropist
A Canfield High School student was selected by the Association of Fundraising Professionals as the 2016 Outstanding Young Philanthropist honoree for Mahoning and Shenango counties. Kate Jenkins, a junior, will be honored at the National Philanthropy Day Event on Nov. 18, during an awards ceremony at Mr. Anthony’s from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Jenkins was nominated by Becky Keck, Executive Director of the SMARTS program, with letters of support written by Craig Olson, Canfield School Board President, high school students and a member of the Youngstown Junior Women’s League. She was nominated for her fundraising efforts that led to the creation of the first ever Art Club at Canfield High School.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit
The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
