Contra dance to be Nov. 12
The Western Reserve Contra Dance will take place from 7-9:30 p.m. on Nov. 12 at the Dublin Grange Hall, located at 6571 Fairground Boulevard in Canfield. The “contra” is a New England social dance with ever-changing partners and live traditional music by the band “One String Short.” A caller will teach each dance and guide the dancers. Dress is casual, beginners and all ages are welcome, partners are not required and new friends will be made. Admission is $8 and light refreshments will be served. LTP to assemble care bags for the homeless
Local non-profit organization Love This Place (LTP) is looking to provide emergency materials to area homeless population by assembling care bags for the homeless. LTP invites the public to Magic Tree Pub & Eatery on Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. to participate in assembling bags containing materials such as nonperishable snacks, bottles of water, gloves, hats, blankets, etc. LTP is also encouraging participants to help sponsor bags at $20 per bag by donating either by check with “Care Bags” in the memo and sent to PO Box 3726 Youngstown, OH 44513 or directly online at http://lovethisplace.us/giving/.
Give-A-Coat program
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mahoning Valley & Western Pennsylvania is helping local youth stay warm this winter through its annual Give-A-Coat program. The Give-A-Coat campaign provides new winter coats to youth in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties who have pre-registered with the Salvation Army in their county. The upcoming Give-A-Coat program dates and locations are Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Salvation Army, located at 1501 Glenwood Ave in Youngstown, and Nov. 12 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Salvation Army, located at 270 Franklin St. in Youngstown. Short Fiction Day
Space is still available for area fiction writers who want to be part of the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day. The annual literary event is scheduled for Dec. 21 from 6-9 p.m. at Courtyard Square, located at 645 E. State Street in Salem. The public event, now in its third year, provides local writers with the opportunity to share their work with area fans, participants and other authors able to sell their own books during the event. A limited number of spaces at $10 each are available for those authors who aren’t reading but would like to make their books available for sale. Sellers must bring their own tables — no larger than 6 feet. Space reservations are required and must be paid in advance. Carlozzi annual funds drive
Carlozzi Financial Services is again helping local families in need this holiday season. The public is invited to join Carlozzi Financial Services and their clients to give a monetary donation to Second Harvest Food Bank. Monetary donations can be mailed to Carlozzi Financial Services, 831 Southwestern Run, Suite 1, Poland. For information, visit www.CarlozziFinancialServices.com. Second Harvest Food Bank distributed 10.4 million pounds of food in 2015 in the tri-county area. Last year, Carlozzi Financial Services collected $1,225 in monetary donations. Mark Carlozzi is hoping that this year will be even greater.
Friendly Squares monthly dance

Boardman Park Christmas events
Create a new family tradition by gathering your family and friends and coming out to Boardman’s Community Christmas, to decorate your own family named tree, see Santa and enjoy Holiday music. Beginning at 4 p.m., bring some natural decorations and decorate one of the park’s pine trees. Santa will be arriving by fire truck at 4:20 p.m. Be sure to bring your camera and take a picture with Santa in the gazebo. Then, head up to The St. James Meeting House and enjoy some cookies and hot chocolate while listening to Christmas music and caroling led by Tom Ruggieri and Linda Smrek and The Boardman High School Band beginning at 4:30 p.m. The lighting of the Community Christmas Tree will take place at 4:45 p.m. All activities are free and will take place near the gazebo and St. James Church. They will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Boardman Lions Club Food Pantry at Boardman Center Intermediate School.
ABWA Christmas celebration
On Dec. 13, the three chapters (Mill Creek Chapter, Tri-Gold Chapter and Youngstown Charter Chapter) will meet at A La Cart for their annual Christmas celebration. Welcome begins at 6 p.m. and a sit down dinner will follow at 6:30 p.m. The menu will consist of your choice of Swiss chicken, stuffed pork chops or stuffed flounder, along with mashed potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, cup of wedding soup, rolls, butter, coffee, tea and dessert. The cost will be $21. Reservations must be made by calling Shirley Pappagallo at 330-270-9779, no later than Dec. 4. Entertainment for the evening will be Judy Conti’s Dancing Divas and contributions will be collected for the Beatitude House as the charity and an optional gift exchange will be held for those interested. The public is welcomed. Join for an enjoyable evening together and see what American Business Women’s Association is all about. There will be no business meetings at this event.
Veterans Day Social meeting to be Nov. 12
Northeast Ohio Women Veterans Unit 21 is hosting its annual Veterans Day Social meeting on Nov. 12 at the Danbury in North Canton starting at 11:30 a.m. NEOWV21 is the regional unit of Military Women Across the Nation, a nationwide women veteran service organization. All women who have served in the armed forces is encouraged and welcome to attend. During this social meeting, the unit will be celebrating the contributions of women in the military as well as planning the holidays for the women at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky. Gorant food drive
Gorant Chocolatier is “Lending a Hand to Stop Hunger” in the Mahoning Valley this holiday season by hosting their second annual food drive. Starting Nov. 1, customers can donate non-perishable food items and receive 5 percent off their purchase for each item donated (up to 25 percent). The food drive continues through Nov. 17. Participating locations include the Boardman Factory location (8301 Market Street), and their Canfield/Westford Commons location (4259 Boardman-Canfield Road) The most needed food items for this holiday season include boxed stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, canned yams, canned vegetables and gravy mix.
Drama guild to present “West Side Story”
The Boardman Drama Guild will present “West Side Story” on Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 18 and 19 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. The production will take place at 7777 Glenwood Ave. in Boardman and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Jeannine Hodge Memorial Scholarship. Bin sale
On Nov. 12, Boardman High School National Honor Society is hosting its annual Bin Sale from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the high school. There you can sell your antiques, electronics, clothes, etc. in a 5x5 spot, for $5. You can even buy multiple spots. All the proceeds go to Boardman NHS, while all the profit on items you sell goes in your pocket. GA to meet
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
Poland Lions sponsor blanket drive
The Poland Lions Club is sponsoring a Blanket of Kindness drive Nov. 1-30. The group is collecting new and gently used blankets and comforters in sizes twin, full and queen for those children and families in need. Consider donating a blanket to help those in need in your community keep warm this winter. Blanket donation drop-off locations are Poland Methodist Church, Poland Home Savings, Wittenauer’s Cafe, Farmers National Bank, Town and Country Dry Cleaners, and Hair Together Salon, located at 5500 Market Street in Boardman (across from Market Street School). Medicare Informational Program
Join the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program volunteer for this informational program for those approaching Medicare, or for those needing to meet Medicare’s open enrollment deadline of Dec. 7 at the Boardman library on Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. They will discuss basic Medicare, supplemental insurance, prescription drug options and more. Take-home handouts will be provided.
Recording your personal history
Join the Boardman library on Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. for the second of the workshops about creating a memoir of your personal recollections to pass on to your family’s future generations. Based on Bob Greene’s book, “To Our Children’s Children,” you will discuss a variety of subjects you may wish to consider for inclusion, how to organize your project and methods to use for recording and preserving your personal history. Instructional handouts are included. Attend one or all of the workshops. Projects can be completed in time for holiday gift giving. Playtime at your library
Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Boardman library on Nov. 16 at 10 a.m. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This event is for ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in November. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s
Join the Boardman library Nov. 30 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Parachute play
Bring the whole family to the Boardman library on Nov. 22 at 6:30 p.m. or Nov. 23 at 10 a.m. for stories and parachute play to this 30-minute story time. This event is fun for all ages.
I am thankful
List or draw what you are thankful for during the Boardman library’s month long celebration during library hours in November. All artwork will be on display.
Lego my library
Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library on Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.
Night owl story time
This is an evening story time for children ages 3-5. Each child must be accompanied by an adult in this 30-minute program featuring finger plays, stories and a craft activity at the Boardman library every Tuesday in November at 6:30 p.m.
Clothespin picture frame
Join the Boardman library on Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in creating a piece of art for your pictures. Bring photographs of things you are thankful for this season and share stories while painting and decorating a frame using clothespins. Registration is required. This is for teens in grades 7-12.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit
The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
