TRUMBULL

Girard: Veterans Day Services sponsored by the Girard Veterans Council will start at 5:30 p.m. with a parade. The lineup will begin behind the Boardman Medical Supply, with step-off at 6 p.m., marching south on Market to Liberty Street, west on Liberty to the viaduct. Rev. Rhonda Gallagher of Trinity Lutheran Church will offer a prayer followed by the tossing of the wreath by Patricia Murphy, Ladies Auxiliary president of Garrison #422, escorted by Bill Ranilla, commander of Army-Navy Garrison #422. There will be a rifle salute by the Girard Veterans Council Honor Guard. The parade will re-form and end at the War Memorial.

Girard: The public is invited to a dedication honoring Vietnam War veterans, 325 N. State St., at 3 p.m. Girard Veterans Council Honor Guard will attend. A small reception will follow the ceremony.

Hubbard: Hubbard Middle School will host a ceremony at 8:30 a.m. in the auditorium, 350 Hall Ave. The Hubbard VFW will attend for the presentation of colors, and Jack Betts, a veteran and substitute teacher, will be the guest speaker. Students will read original writings and present a project in honor of veterans. The walk of veterans will follow the ceremony.

MAHONING

Austintown: Austintown High School Veterans Day program at 9 a.m. will include the Fitch color guard, trucks with hands-on displays as well as two or three World War II veterans. The featured speaker will be Chris Wortman, Gold Star mother. Wortman’s youngest son, Army Sgt. Robert Carr, was on his second tour of Iraq. On March 13, 2007, while on an advanced patrol, Carr was killed by an IED.

Austintown: The Austintown school board and the Fitch band sponsor their fifth annual chili cook-off followed by their veterans concert Sunday. The community is invited to participate. From 2 to 4 p.m., various chili selections will be offered, along with cornbread, cupcakes and a beverage. Awards will be given for the best chili. Beginning at 5 p.m., veterans will be saluted with a concert in the gym. A veterans color guard will participate, along with the band’s color guard, flag line and rifle line. In addition, the band will present its 2016 Fitch Band Patriotism Award to the Austintown Police Department. The band also will recognize the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Tickets are available at the door. The cost is $10 for adults for the dinner and concert and $5 for students, veterans and senior citizens 65 and older for dinner and concert. Concert-only tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students; veterans and senior citizens 65 and older are free.

Campbell: Campbell Middle School, 2002 Community Circle, will honor veterans at 9:15 a.m. Students from the fourth-grade fine arts classes will provide patriotic music and medleys. Local members of the VFW and American Legion also will attend.

Campbell: Christ the Good Shepherd Parish will honor veterans with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Church, 633 Porter Ave. Fellowship and refreshments will follow.

Canfield: Canfield Village Middle School will honor military personnel and their families and thank them for their sacrifices from 9 to 10 a.m. at the middle school, 42 Wadsworth St.

Canfield: C.H. Campbell Elementary School, 300 Moreland Drive, will have its annual Veterans Day assembly at 2 p.m. in the gymnasium. Students will hear from Bruce Kirkland, who enlisted in the Marine Corps in August 1956 at age 17. Kirkland is the Toys for Tots representative in the Canfield School District. Veterans will be presented small flags and treated to light refreshments.

Lowellville: Lowellville school’s annual Veterans Day assembly is scheduled for 8:45 a.m. in the gym. It will be presented to grades three to 12, and it will last about 45 minutes. Third- through sixth-graders will make thank-you notes/pictures to decorate the gym and/or present to the veterans.

North Jackson: Jackson-Milton High School, 13910 Mahoning Ave., will host its annual Veterans Day program at 9 a.m. in the cafeteria. Guest speaker will be alum and veteran Pastor Jack Acri. Veterans will be treated to a light lunch.

North Lima: Beaver Township Veterans program, 1 p.m. Saturday at the fire station, 601 W. South Range Road.

Struthers: Struthers High School and Middle School, 111 Euclid Ave., will have a Veterans Day assembly at 9 a.m. At least three speakers will talk about love for country and sacrifice.

Struthers: Former state Sen. Harry Meshel will speak in honor of Veterans Day at 11 a.m. at the Struthers Veterans Memorial at Morrison Street and Euclid Avenue The Struthers High School band will perform.

Youngstown: East High School and the Programs of Promise at Wilson will host Veterans Day events. The program at East, 474 Bennington Ave., begins at 2 p.m. Keynote speaker is the school district’s interim Superintendent Stephen A. Stohla, a retired colonel with the Army National Guard. Principal Denise Vaclav Danko, will give special recognition to East High School veterans and JROTC students. The observance at Wilson, 2725 Gibson St., begins at noon. The program includes a traditional ceremony with color guard, taps and student participation. In addition, there will be a special table setting for those who are missing in action.

Youngstown: Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission will host “Honoring our Heroes” at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Oakhill Renaissance Place entrance A, 345 Oak Hill Ave. The Ohio Military Hall of Fame Class of 2015-2016 inductees from Mahoning County will be honored. Inductees are Jennifer Baun, John Koonse, Kenneth Nagel, Norman Paul and Robert Pluchinsky.

Youngstown: American Legion Post #504, 2225 Glenwood Ave., with the Women’s Auxiliary & Sons of the American Legion Veterans Day program at 5 p.m. Guest speaker will be Caroline Jones, Army veteran. Jesse Dukes, Bennett Jones, Keith Langford and Lawrence Whited will be honored. Dinner to follow.

Youngstown: Catholic War Veterans Post 1292 Veterans Day ceremony, 609 Steel St., 4 p.m. A luncheon will follow.

COLUMBIANA

Leetonia: State Sen. Joe Schiavoni of Boardman, D-33rd, and state Rep. John Boccieri of Poland, D-59th, a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force, will highlight a Veterans Day celebration at Leetonia High School, 450 Walnut St., for students and community beginning at 9 a.m.

VETS’ MEAL DEALS

These businesses are offering special deals for veterans today unless otherwise noted:

Applebee’s will offer a free “Thank You Meal” menu for veterans and active-duty military. The meal is dine-in only. A valid veteran’s form of ID or uniform is required. Niles, Boardman and Hermitage, Pa., restaurants are participating.

Participating Handel’s Ice Cream locations will give all veterans and military personnel, with a valid military ID, a free single scoop regular or sugar cone. No purchase is necessary.

Olive Garden restaurants will offer a free entree from a special menu to active duty military and military veterans. The special menu features six of Olive Garden’s most popular items. Entrees are served with unlimited homemade soup or house salad and breadsticks.

Free dinner for veterans, noon to 4 p.m., Petri Club, 3650 Shady Run Road, Youngstown.

Long Horn Steakhouse will offer a free appetizer or dessert (no purchase required, no restrictions) to anyone showing proof of military service. Additionally, they will offer 10 percent off for guests who dine with veterans.

Sunrise Inn, downtown Warren, will offer one free meal today for all veterans and active-duty military. Must present valid ID.

Dairy Queens at 355 S. Meridian Road, Cornersburg; 146 N. Canfield-Niles Road, Austintown; and 241 E. Park Ave., Columbiana, will offer a free, medium Blizzard to active or retired military. Uniform or proper ID required.

O’Charley’s will offer a free meal from its $9.99 menu. This includes items such as chicken tenders and fries and homestyle chicken pot pie.

Biketown Harley-Davidson, 5700 Interstate Blvd., in partnership with Y-103, is sponsoring a free lunch for veterans supplied by Yolo Grille & Taproom from noon to 3 p.m. today and Saturday. There is a $5 donation for nonmilitary people. Proceeds benefit the veterans holiday food drive.

Quaker Steak & Lube is offering veterans a complimentary or discounted meal of their choice by simply showing proof of service to their server before ordering their meal. Proof of service includes: U.S. Uniform Services Retired ID Card; Veterans Organization Card (i.e., American Legion, VFW); photograph in uniform; wearing uniform; DD214; or citation or commendation. Free meal selections vary by location and may include items up to a certain dollar amount or a special menu of select options from which to choose. Discounts also vary by location for military service men and women. Guests can contact their local Quaker Steak & Lube for information on the offer available in their area.

Gorant Chocolatier is offering 25 percent off to all military members and veterans through the weekend with identification. Participating locations are: the Boardman Factory Store at 8301 Market St.; the Canfield location at 4259 Boardman-Canfield Road Suite No. 5; and the Austintown location at 5539 Mahoning Ave.
