Ellsworth VFW honors WW II veteran

SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR: Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9571 in Ellsworth recently honored Bernard S. Check with a Congressional Proclamation of Recognition for his service in the Army during World War II. Check was drafted in 1945 as a junior in high school and eventually served at General MacArthur’s headquarters in Tokyo. Some of the awards he received included the Asiatic Pacific Theater ribbon, Victory medal, and an Army Occupation Medal, Japan. Check, seated, received the award from Denny Furman, Berlin Center Township trustee, standing on the left; Tom Check, vice post commander; Artie Spellman, Ellsworth Township trustee; and Ken Calhoun, post commander.
