Celebrate Short Fiction Day

Space is still available for area fiction writers who want to be part of the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day. The annual literary event is scheduled for Dec. 21 from 6-9 p.m. at Courtyard Square, located at 645 E. State Street in Salem. The public event, now in its third year, provides local writers with the opportunity to share their work with area fans, participants and other authors able to sell their own books during the event. A limited number of spaces at $10 each are available for those authors who aren’t reading but would like to make their books available for sale. Sellers must bring their own tables — no larger than 6 feet. Space reservations are required and must be paid in advance. Victorian Players hosts auditions

The Victorian Players recently announced auditions for “Greetings,” a warmhearted, touching comedy for all seasons, in which an entire family’s belief system is turned upside down. The audition dates are Nov. 6 at 3 p.m. and Nov. 7 at 6 p.m., at the theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. Greetings has the following cast requirements: 1 female to play a sweet Catholic mother, age 55-65; 1 male to play a sour Catholic father, age 55-65; 1 male to play the son, age 20-30; 1 male, age 18-25, to play the intellectually disabled younger brother; and 1 female to play the Jewish fianc e, age 25-30. Newcomers Club meeting

The November meeting of the Newcomers Club of Canfield will take place on Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Salt Sensations, located at 1449 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman. Join in for a simple “guided meditation” session. The experience lasts 45 minutes with the added pleasure of dipping your toes in the sand, seeing the waves lap onto the beach and hearing the surf spill onto the beach. The cost of this meeting is $10. Bring an appetizer or a bottle of wine to share. Water and Mai Tai cocktails will be provided. Feel free to wear your favorite island tropical shirt. Best dressed Hawaiian gal will win a prize. They will also be collecting items for the children at Beatitude House to give to their mothers for Christmas. The December meeting will be the annual Christmas Party on Dec. 13.

Contra dance

The Western Reserve Contra Dance will take place from 7-9:30 p.m. on Nov. 12 at the Dublin Grange Hall, located at 6571 Fairground Boulevard in Canfield. The “contra” is a New England social dance with ever-changing partners and live traditional music by the band “One String Short.” A caller will teach each dance and guide the dancers. Dress is casual, beginners and all ages are welcome, partners are not required and new friends will be made. Admission is $8 and light refreshments will be served. Kitting Guild meeting

The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. A potluck dinner will take place and members are reminded to bring a covered dish to share, as well as their own table service. Any member wishing to sell their unwanted yarn stashes, as well as gently used notions, are asked to ticket them with their name and selling price. Fast and furriest

The fourth annual Fast and Furriest 5K Run / Walk will be Nov. 12 at Waterworth Memorial Park-Pavilion 8 off Superior Ave in Salem. There’ll be a 500-meter dash with your dog at 8:45 a.m., followed by the 5k at 9:15 a.m. All proceeds will benefit Legacy Dog Rescue, a 501c3 non-profit animal welfare organization helping dogs in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties and surrounding areas. Blue Christmas service

The holidays are generally a joyous time, but the loss of a loved one, a beloved pet or a life-changing situation can make them shine less bright. Harbor Light Hospice, Shepherd of the Valley and Lane Funeral Home invite you to their Blue Christmas, a service to offer support, healing and encouragement during the holidays on Dec. 6 at 6 p.m., with registration and refreshments starting at 5:30 p.m. They will be reflecting and remembering that which has lessened the glow this time of year. GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

GFWC meeting to be Nov. 7

The next meeting of the GFWC Ohio Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will be Nov. 7 at Glenellen Assisted Living, 9661 Market St. in Boardman, at 7 p.m. Members are to bring items for the shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. The BPJWL Juniorettes will be putting the shoeboxes together on Nov. 13. Items collected for local Veterans will be organized and delivered. The final donation will be monetary. Judge Shirley Christian will be the guest speaker that evening. Hostesses for the meeting are Tina Bellino, Joyce Martin and Sperry Rongone. The BPJWL is open to women ages 18 and up, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. ABWA anniversary dinner

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will celebrate their anniversary dinner at The Manor at the corner of Kirk Road and Route 46 at 6 p.m. on Nov. 6. There will be a buffet, including penne pasta and meatballs, chicken parmesan, roasted potatoes, Key West vegetable mix, coffee and tea for $19. Poland Lions sponsor blanket drive

The Poland Lions Club is sponsoring a Blanket of Kindness drive Nov. 1-30. The group is collecting new and gently used blankets and comforters in sizes twin, full and queen for those children and families in need. Consider donating a blanket to help those in need in your community keep warm this winter. Blanket donation drop-off locations are Poland Methodist Church, Poland Home Savings, Wittenauer’s Cafe, Farmers National Bank, Town and Country Dry Cleaners, and Hair Together Salon, located at 5500 Market Street in Boardman (across from Market Street School). Lions club hosts poster contest

The Poland Lions Club is sponsoring the Lions International Peace Poster Contest to students ages 11, 12 and 13 as of the date of Nov. 15. The theme this year is “A Celebration of Peace.“ Artwork must be no smaller than 13 inches by 20 inches and no bigger than 20 inches by 24 inches. Each entry must be the work of one student and original work of the student. An entry pack may be obtained at their school or by contacting the Poland Lions at 330-360-3641. A look at previous winning posters and a video about the contest can be found at the International Web site of www.lionsclubs.org. The local deadline for poster submission is Nov. 10.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

Good grief! It’s Thanksgiving! Join the Poland library on Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m. as they celebrate with the traditional Charlie Brown Thanksgiving dinner: jelly beans, pretzels, toast and more. You’ll play games, make a craft and have some treats. This is for children of all ages.

A children’s holiday journey

Participate and explore the true meaning of this special season at the Poland library on Nov. 26 at 10 a.m. This festive performance by Learning Station will share a heartwarming, celebratory message of caring, sharing and joyful cheer. Join Don Monopoli and celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. A treat for the entire family. No reservations are needed.

Playtime at your library

Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Poland library on Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This event is for children ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library at 10 a.m. every Wednesday in November. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Macaroni and please

Join the Poland library on Nov. 17 at 10:30 a.m. for a special edition of Toddler Story Time. One-minute manners will be presented to youngsters, including “please and thank you,” “excuse me,” how to set the table and the proper way to eat soup. Includes developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children will receive a special place mat and must be accompanied by an adult.

Fun time for 4’s and 5’s

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Poland library on Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

Listen and Lego

Listen to a story and then have fun building with Legos at the Poland library on Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. Legos will be provided. This is for children ages 4-7.

Read to Roxie

Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International at the Poland library on Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This is for children in grades 1-4.

Trim a tree for November

Decorate an ornament for the all-seasons tree at the Poland library during library hours in November. This is for children of all ages.

Hogwarts potions class

Dress as your favorite wizard and join the Poland library on Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. for Potions 101. You will be sorted into houses and each group will visit the hands-on laboratory stations. The children’s concoctions are sure to please budding chemists. Registration is required so call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This is for tweens and teens grades 5 and up.

Yoga class

Friends of PLYMC is sponsoring a Yoga Class every Wednesday in the Poland library meeting room from 5-6 p.m. Pay as you attend at $10 per session.

Book-A-Librarian

Would you like a personal introduction to resources available at the library? Need more time with a librarian than you can get over the phone or if you just walk in? America’s Schoolmaster exhibit

The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
