WWII, Korean War vet honored

A Columbiana County veteran who served in World War II and the Korean War was honored Thursday for his post-military service in the state.

Robert Bertschy, 89, of East Liverpool, was one of 19 military men and women inducted as part of this year’s class of the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame.

The Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame was launched in 1992 to recognize the post-military service of veterans.

Among other activities, Bertschy, who served in the Navy, has been active in the Disabled American Veterans for almost seven decades.

Election of MSWCD board of supervisors

YOUNGSTOWN

The 65th annual election of Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 17 at the district office, 850 Industrial Road.

There are two open seats on the MSWCD Board of Supervisors. Candidates are Sara Greier of Canfield, Donna Nagle of Struthers, and Kimberly P. Urig of Canfield.

All residents or landowners in Mahoning County who are at least 18 years of age are eligible to vote. If unable to attend, absentee ballots and more information can be requested at 330-740-7995.

Boardman Township leaf pickup program

The township is conducting its annual leaf pickup program through Nov. 18. For a complete list of collection days for each road, check here: www.boardmantwp.com/2016/09/27/2016-annual-leaf-pick-program/.

Leaves are to be put in recyclable brown paper bags and brought to the curb for pickup by the road department. Due to the Veteran’s Day holiday Nov. 11, leaves scheduled for pickup that day will be picked up the following Monday.

Pa. man pleads guilty

PITTSBURGH

A former Lawrence County, Pa., resident pleaded guilty in federal court to possessing material depicting the sexual exploitation of a minor, the U.S. attorney said Thursday.

Sean J. Barner, 38, formerly of New Bedford, Pa., pleaded guilty to one count before U. S. District Court Judge Mark R. Hornak, who will sentence him at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 22.

The court was advised that, on March 28, 2015, Barner unlawfully possessed computer graphics files containing photographs and videos depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. The law provides for a total sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both.
