CVMS Pancreatic Cancer Awareness
Everyone has been touched in some way by cancer. Pancreatic Cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer as 75 percent of people diagnosed pass away within the first year of diagnosis. Students and staff at Canfield Village Middle School are hoping to raise awareness of this deadly diagnosis. November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and during the week of Nov. 14, CVMS is selling purple bead necklaces during all lunch periods for $1 each. In addition, Nov. 17 is World Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day and the school will have a purple out.
Gorant food drive
Gorant Chocolatier is “Lending a Hand to Stop Hunger” in the Mahoning Valley this holiday season by hosting their 2nd annual food drive. Starting Nov. 1, customers can donate non-perishable food items and receive 5 percent off their purchase for each item donated (up to 25 percent). The food drive continues through Nov. 17. Participating locations include their Boardman Factory location (8301 Market Street), and their Canfield/Westford Commons location (4259 Boardman-Canfield Road) The most needed food items for this holiday season include boxed stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, canned yams, canned vegetables and gravy mix.
Canfield Historical Society lecture
The Canfield Historical Society’s Fall Lecture Series concludes on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. with a lecture by Larry Baughman from the Poland Historical Society. Baughman will be speaking on “Following the Fowlers: From Connecticut to Poland to Canfield.” The free lecture takes place at the Canfield Historical Society Bond House, located at 44 West Main Street in Canfield, across from the Canfield library. Headache relief seminar
There will be a free seminar presented by a local leading authority on natural ways to address the root cause of headaches. Celebrate Short Fiction Day
Space is still available for area fiction writers who want to be part of the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day. The annual literary event is scheduled for Dec. 21 from 6-9 p.m. at Courtyard Square, located at 645 E. State Street in Salem. The public event, now in its third year, provides local writers with the opportunity to share their work with area fans, participants and other authors able to sell their own books during the event. A limited number of spaces at $10 each are available for those authors who aren’t reading but would like to make their books available for sale. Sellers must bring their own tables — no larger than 6 feet. Space reservations are required and must be paid in advance. Newcomers Club meeting
The November meeting of the Newcomers Club of Canfield will take place on Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Salt Sensations, located at 1449 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman. Join in for a simple “guided meditation” session. The experience lasts 45 minutes with the added pleasure of dipping your toes in the sand, seeing the waves lap onto the beach and hearing the surf spill onto the beach. The cost of this meeting is $10. Bring an appetizer or a bottle of wine to share. Water and Mai Tai cocktails will be provided. Feel free to wear your favorite island tropical shirt. Best dressed Hawaiian gal will win a prize. They will also be collecting items for the children at Beatitude House to give to their mothers for Christmas. The December meeting will be the annual Christmas Party on Dec. 13.
Victorian Players hosts auditions
The Victorian Players recently announced auditions for “Greetings,” a warmhearted, touching comedy for all seasons, in which an entire family’s belief system is turned upside down. The audition dates are Nov. 6 at 3 p.m. and Nov. 7 at 6 p.m., at the theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. Greetings has the following cast requirements: 1 female to play a sweet Catholic mother, age 55-65; 1 male to play a sour Catholic father, age 55-65; 1 male to play the son, age 20-30; 1 male, age 18-25, to play the intellectually disabled younger brother; and 1 female to play the Jewish fianc e, age 25-30. Kitting Guild meeting
The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. A potluck dinner will take place and members are reminded to bring a covered dish to share, as well as their own table service. Any member wishing to sell their unwanted yarn stashes, as well as gently used notions, are asked to ticket them with their name and selling price. Contra dance
The Western Reserve Contra Dance will take place from 7-9:30 p.m. on Nov. 12 at the Dublin Grange Hall, located at 6571 Fairground Boulevard in Canfield. The “contra” is a New England social dance with ever-changing partners and live traditional music by the band “One String Short.” A caller will teach each dance and guide the dancers. Dress is casual, beginners and all ages are welcome, partners are not required and new friends will be made. Admission is $8 and light refreshments will be served. Spaghetti dinner
Lord of Life Church of Canfield will again serve their annual Election Day spaghetti dinner at Canfield High School cafeteria on Nov. 8. Dinner will be served from 4:30-8 p.m. The dinner includes spaghetti with homemade meat sauce, salad, rolls and butter, beverage and an assortment of homemade desserts. Take out orders are available. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance by calling the church office at 330-533-3531. Tickets for adults are $8, students are $4 and children under age 4 are free. Gathering place event
There will be a Gathering Place event on Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. at the Lord of Life Church. The speaker will be a local counselor Kurt Beler and his topic will be stress. Lunch will be provided by the Woodlands at Hampton Woods. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that is held on the second Monday of the month every month. Different games and activities are also offered each month. Join in a fulfilling afternoon of fun and socialization. Spread the word and bring your friends. Fast and furriest
Join in on Nov. 12 for the fourth annual Fast and Furriest 5K Run / Walk at Waterworth Memorial Park-Pavilion 8 off Superior Ave in Salem. There will be a 500-meter dash with your dog at 8:45 a.m., followed by the 5k at 9:15 a.m. All proceeds from the race will benefit Legacy Dog Rescue. LDR is a 501c3 non-profit animal welfare organization helping dogs in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties and surrounding areas. Playtime at your library
Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Canfield library on Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This event is for children ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.
GA to meet
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
GFWC meeting to be Nov. 7
The next meeting of the GFWC Ohio Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on Nov. 7 at Glenellen Assisted Living, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman, at 7 p.m. Members are to bring items for the shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. The BPJWL Juniorettes will be putting the shoeboxes together on Nov. 13. Items collected for local Veterans will be organized and delivered. The final donation will be monetary. Judge Shirley Christian will be the guest speaker that evening. Hostesses for the meeting are Tina Bellino, Joyce Martin and Sperry Rongone. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women ages 18 and up, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. ABWA anniversary dinner
The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will celebrate their anniversary dinner at The Manor at the corner of Kirk Road and Route 46 at 6 p.m. on Nov. 6. MCCTC salon open
The Salon at MCCTC, located in the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, is open for business. The student run salon will be open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. beginning on Oct. 18. The cosmetology students will offer haircuts, styling, hair color, manicures, pedicures, facials and hair removal. Services are performed by the students under the supervision of their licensed instructor with prices starting at $5. Canfield High School student is 2016 Outstanding Young Philanthropist
A Canfield High School student was selected by the Association of Fundraising Professionals as the 2016 Outstanding Young Philanthropist honoree for Mahoning and Shenango counties. Kate Jenkins, a junior, will be honored at the National Philanthropy Day Event on Nov. 18, during an awards ceremony at Mr. Anthony’s from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Jenkins was nominated by Becky Keck, Executive Director of the SMARTS program, with letters of support written by Craig Olson, Canfield School Board President, high school students and a member of the Youngstown Junior Women’s League. She was nominated for her fundraising efforts that led to the creation of the first ever Art Club at Canfield High School.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit
The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
