Local school hosts Veteran’s Day Luncheon
The students and staff at West Boulevard Elementary School, located at 6125 West Blvd. in Boardman, would like to welcome all veterans to their annual Veteran’s Day Luncheon and Program on Nov. 11. The children of West Boulevard Elementary School enjoy the experience of having lunch with such dedicated and special guests. The agenda for the event is : Special Veteran’s Day Luncheon from 11 a.m. until noon and the third-grade students performing Veteran’s Day Music Program at 12:15 p.m. Bring your stories and a willingness to share memories with elementary school age children. Veterans Day Social meeting to be Nov. 12
Northeast Ohio Women Veterans Unit 21 is hosting its annual Veterans Day Social meeting on Nov. 12 at the Danbury in North Canton starting at 11:30 a.m. NEOWV21 is the regional unit of Military Women Across the Nation, a nationwide women veteran service organization. All women who have served in the armed forces is encouraged and welcome to attend. During this social meeting, the unit will be celebrating the contributions of women in the military as well as planning the holidays for the women at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky. Gorant food drive
Gorant Chocolatier is “Lending a Hand to Stop Hunger” in the Mahoning Valley this holiday season by hosting their second annual food drive. Starting Nov. 1, customers can donate non-perishable food items and receive 5 percent off their purchase for each item donated (up to 25 percent). The food drive continues through Nov. 17. Participating locations include the Boardman Factory location (8301 Market Street), and their Canfield/Westford Commons location (4259 Boardman-Canfield Road) The most needed food items for this holiday season include boxed stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, canned yams, canned vegetables and gravy mix.
Drama guild to present “West Side Story”
The Boardman Drama Guild will present “West Side Story” on Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 18 and 19 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. The production will take place at 7777 Glenwood Ave. in Boardman and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Jeannine Hodge Memorial Scholarship. St. Brendan hosts chicken dinner
On Nov. 6, St. Brendan Church will host a drive-through stuffed chicken breast dinner from 12:30 p.m. until it is sold out. The dinner will also consist of mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and a dessert. The cost is $9. There is no need to get out of your car, just enter the back parking lot of the school off N. Schenley Avenue and make a left turn to the first set of kitchen doors and your dinners will be brought to you.
Victorian Players hosts auditions
The Victorian Players recently announced auditions for “Greetings,” a warmhearted, touching comedy for all seasons, in which an entire family’s belief system is turned upside down. The audition dates are Nov. 6 at 3 p.m. and Nov. 7 at 6 p.m., at the theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. Greetings has the following cast requirements: 1 female to play a sweet Catholic mother, age 55-65; 1 male to play a sour Catholic father, age 55-65; 1 male to play the son, age 20-30; 1 male, age 18-25, to play the intellectually disabled younger brother; and 1 female to play the Jewish fianc e, age 25-30. Contra dance
The Western Reserve Contra Dance will take place from 7-9:30 p.m. on Nov. 12 at the Dublin Grange Hall, located at 6571 Fairground Boulevard in Canfield. The “contra” is a New England social dance with ever-changing partners and live traditional music by the band “One String Short.” A caller will teach each dance and guide the dancers. Dress is casual, beginners and all ages are welcome, partners are not required and new friends will be made. Admission is $8 and light refreshments will be served. Newcomers Club meeting
The November meeting of the Newcomers Club of Canfield will take place on Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Salt Sensations, located at 1449 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman. Join in for a simple “guided meditation” session. The experience lasts 45 minutes with the added pleasure of dipping your toes in the sand, seeing the waves lap onto the beach and hearing the surf spill onto the beach. The cost of this meeting is $10. Bring an appetizer or a bottle of wine to share. Water and Mai Tai cocktails will be provided. Feel free to wear your favorite island tropical shirt. Best dressed Hawaiian gal will win a prize. They will also be collecting items for the children at Beatitude House to give to their mothers for Christmas. The December meeting will be the annual Christmas Party on Dec. 13.
Bin sale
On Nov. 12, Boardman High School National Honor Society is hosting its annual Bin Sale from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the high school. There you can sell your antiques, electronics, clothes, etc. in a 5x5 spot, for $5. You can even buy multiple spots. All the proceeds go to Boardman NHS, while all the profit on items you sell goes in your pocket. Scholarship committee to host bake sale
The Mickey Schuster Scholarship Committee of Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive in Boardman, will host an election day bake sale on Nov. 8. A variety of baked goods and coffee will be sold, starting at 6:30 a.m. All proceeds will go to the Mickey Schuster Scholarship Fund and are distributed each year to college students at Bethel.
GFWC meeting to be Nov. 7
The next meeting of the GFWC Ohio Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on Nov. 7 at Glenellen Assisted Living, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman, at 7 p.m. Members are to bring items for the shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. The BPJWL Juniorettes will be putting the shoeboxes together on Nov. 13. Items collected for local Veterans will be organized and delivered. The final donation will be monetary. Judge Shirley Christian will be the guest speaker that evening. Hostesses for the meeting are Tina Bellino, Joyce Martin and Sperry Rongone. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women ages 18 and up, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will celebrate their anniversary dinner at The Manor at the corner of Kirk Road and Route 46 at 6 p.m. on Nov. 6. GA to meet
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
Knitting Guild meeting
The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. A potluck dinner will take place and members are reminded to bring a covered dish to share, as well as their own table service. Any member wishing to sell their unwanted yarn stashes, as well as gently used notions, are asked to ticket them with their name and selling price. Poland Lions sponsor blanket drive
The Poland Lions Club is sponsoring a Blanket of Kindness drive Nov. 1-30. The group is collecting new and gently used blankets and comforters in sizes twin, full and queen for those children and families in need. Consider donating a blanket to help those in need in your community keep warm this winter. Blanket donation drop-off locations are Poland Methodist Church, Poland Home Savings, Wittenauer’s Cafe, Farmers National Bank, Town and Country Dry Cleaners, and Hair Together Salon, located at 5500 Market Street in Boardman (across from Market Street School). Medicare Informational Program
Join the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program volunteer for this informational program for those approaching Medicare, or for those needing to meet Medicare’s open enrollment deadline of Dec. 7 at the Boardman library on Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. They will discuss basic Medicare, supplemental insurance, prescription drug options and more. Take-home handouts will be provided.
Recording your personal history
Join the Boardman library on Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. for the second of the workshops about creating a memoir of your personal recollections to pass on to your family’s future generations. Based on Bob Greene’s book, “To Our Children’s Children,” you will discuss a variety of subjects you may wish to consider for inclusion, how to organize your project and methods to use for recording and preserving your personal history. Instructional handouts are included. Attend one or all of the workshops. Projects can be completed in time for holiday gift giving. Playtime at your library
Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Boardman library on Nov. 16 at 10 a.m. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This event is for ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in November. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s
Join the Boardman library Nov. 2, 9 and 30 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Parachute play
Bring the whole family to the Boardman library on Nov. 22 at 6:30 p.m. or Nov. 23 at 10 a.m. for stories and parachute play to this 30-minute story time. This event is fun for all ages.
I am thankful
List or draw what you are thankful for during the Boardman library’s month long celebration during library hours in November. All artwork will be on display.
Lego my library
Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library on Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.
Night owl story time
This is an evening story time for children ages 3-5. Each child must be accompanied by an adult in this 30-minute program featuring finger plays, stories and a craft activity at the Boardman library every Tuesday in November at 6:30 p.m.
Clothespin picture frame
Join the Boardman library on Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in creating a piece of art for your pictures. Bring photographs of things you are thankful for this season and share stories while painting and decorating a frame using clothespins. Registration is required. This is for teens in grades 7-12.
Check into chess
Join the Boardman library on Nov. 6 at 1:30 p.m. as they play chess this afternoon. This is a family program for all ages. If you would like to learn to play, they’ll be happy to teach you.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit
The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
