Grand opening planned for new Boardman detox center

New Day Recovery, a new detox center on U.S. Route 224, will celebrate its grand opening Monday.
The 16-bed facility at 960 Boardman-Canfield Road offers patients a five- to seven-day detoxification program for opioids, benzodiazepine and alcohol.
New Day officials say the center is a response to the area’s opioid-addiction epidemic, which is killing people at record rates and filling treatment centers to capacity.
“We’re just trying to fill a need. And there’s a lot of passion in this,” said Executive Director Kimberlee DiPillo.
“For the last eight years, we’ve been in the drug-testing business. ... That evolved into the opiate-treatment business,” said CEO Tom Ivany. “It really exposed a huge need here. Clients were coming to us on a daily basis.”
Part of New Day’s focus is on getting patients into longer-term treatment after completing the detox process, which staff members say is crucial to recovering from addiction.
“This is step one. This is just the very, very beginning of the recovery process,” said program director Nicolette Giordano.
New Day employees work closely with other treatment providers to find available spots for patients, then refer patients to those facilities.
The New Day team also touts its “holistic” approach to detox, which combines therapy (such as pet therapy and massages), medication that eases withdrawal symptoms, counseling, yoga and meditation, group sessions, activity nights and regular medical assessments.
Upon completing the program, patients also are eligible to begin using Vivitrol, a medication that blocks the effects of opioids and alcohol.
The facility has 30 staff members, including doctors, counselors and nurses. New Day is slated to add 16 beds to a next-door building next year.
A ribbon-cutting event at New Day Recovery, hosted by the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday.
