Hickman, Malmfeldt win Memorial Mile

A former Youngstown State distance runner and a local radio station director were among the winners at Monday’s Memorial Mile.

The 25th annual race before the 111th Kiwanis Parade in Boardman had 239 participants and was selected for the Regional Championship for the Road Runners Club of America.

Willoughby Hills native Luke Hickman was first to the finish line in 4:27. He was three seconds ahead of Boardman High’s Chris Butler, the runner-up.

Samantha Malmfeldt finished fourth overall and first among women’s competitors (4:42). The 2014 YSU grad was a distance runner for the Penguins under her maiden name, Samantha Hamilton. She beat her former coach, Brian Gorby, who took third in the Men’s Master’s category. Campbell’s Ed Brainard and WYSU director Gary Sexton finished ahead of Gorby, with Sexton finishing first among his peers (5:34). Sexton won on his 60th birthday.

Youngstown’s Karen Grantonic beat former Ursuline standout Wilma Depiore to win the Women’s Master’s (5:52).

Boardman’s Tim Powers and Edinburg Pa. woman Miriam Ortiz won their respective Grand Master’s categories.

Boardman high schooler Nathaniel Ams won the Men’s 15-18 category (4:55) and from Boardman middle school, Mitchell Dunham won the Men’s 12-15 (4:55).

The oldest winner was 81-year-old Austintown man Tom Frederick, who won the Men’s 80 and Up (9:50).
