The Diabetes Empowerment Education Program, a no-cost interactive educational workshop to manage diabetes and encourage small lifestyle changes while learning about diabetes and the way it affects the health of those with the disease, will run Wednesday through July 6 at the Davis Family YMCA. The six weekly workshops will take place from 2:30 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Participants must have Type 1 or 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes and be 60 or older or be a Medicare or Medicare/Medicaid beneficiary. There is no cost to participate, but registration is required. Call 330-270-2855, ext. 109.

Weight-loss procedure

General Surgeon Dr. Jonathan Pulido is the first physician in Northeast Ohio to offer the ReShape Æ Integrated Dual Balloon System, a Federal Drug Administration-approved, first-of-its-kind, nonsurgical weight-loss procedure for people with mild to moderate obesity.

An overview of the new ReShape Æ procedure will be presented by Dr. Pulido during a free community seminar at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Salem Community Center, 1098 N. Ellsworth Ave. To register, call Salem General Surgery at 330-337-2868.

Northeast Ohio Medical University is having a daylong conference, “Women Leaders in a New Health Care Landscape: Headwinds, Challenges and Barriers,” on gender and leadership in the evolving field of health care from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday at the NEOMED Education and Wellness (NEW) Center.

Mental-health screenings planned for open house

As part of Mental Health Month, Mercy Health – Behavioral Health Institute Outpatient Clinic at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital is having an open house from 12 to 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Clinicians will provide depression screenings, carbon-monoxide testing for smokers, and an introduction to specialty services for those with mental-health disorders, including partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient services and tobacco-treatment services.

The BHI Outpatient Clinic is on the seventh floor of St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital and can be accessed from the “B” elevators.

According to Ohio Mental Health & Addiction Services, a mental illness is a condition that impacts a person’s thinking, feeling or mood and may affect his or her ability to relate to others and function on a daily basis. In Ohio, more than 400,000 individuals received public community mental-health services during 2014. Of that total, 154,000 had a diagnosis of either major depression or bipolar depression, and 35,000 were diagnosed with schizophrenia.
