SHARON, PA.

Pennsylvania State and Sharon police and Mercer County sheriff’s deputies and the Department of Public Safety arrested four people, charging them with driving under the influence at a DUI checkpoint between Friday night and Saturday morning.

The checkpoint was in the 100 block of Dock Street. Authorities made contact with 111 motorists. Besides the four DUI arrests, officers issued seven seat-belt, 10 speeding, three driving under suspension and eight other citations, made five arrests for drug-related offenses and issued 45 warnings.

Fire damages home

YOUNGSTOWN

A Monday-morning blaze damaged a home at 482 W. Ravenwood Ave.

No one was injured, and although people live in the South Side house, firefighters said the occupants weren’t home at the time of the blaze. Firefighters who arrived at the home shortly after 4 a.m. saw the back of the house and front porch in flames. The cause is under investigation.

Mathews entry exam

VIENNA

The first portion of the early-entrance exam for children in the Mathews School district who will be age 5 between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31 will take place at 9 a.m. Friday at Baker Elementary School, 4095 Sheridan Drive. Call the board office at 330-637-7000 to pre-register or with questions.

OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology will host three Summer Manufacturing Institutes. Engineering Our Earth runs from June 20-24. Hacker Week runs from July 11-15 and Avionics runs from July 25-29.

All the institutes are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $150 per week, and scholarships are available for those who qualify. The events are a collaboration between OH WOW! and the Youngstown YWCA. Call the YWCA at 330-746-6361 to register or for more information.

Rappel to raise funds

Beatitude House, in partnership with Over the Edge, is again offering individuals the chance to rappel down the side of the Metropolitan Building downtown to raise money for the women and children of Beatitude House.

The event will take place Sept. 23-24. All participants are asked to raise a minimum of $1,000. No experience is needed to rappel. Over the Edge technicians teach participants everything they need to know.
