Kuhn’s RBI double lifts Ohio State past Iowa

OMAHA, Neb.

Troy Kuhn hit an RBI double in the top of the ninth inning to earn Ohio State the Big Ten Conference Tournament championship with an 8-7 win over Iowa on Sunday.

The tournament title is the first for the fourth-seeded Buckeyes (43-18-1) since 2007, and they earned their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2009 with the league championship.

Ohio State led 7-4 entering the bottom of the eighth inning before the Hawkeyes (30-26) tied the game with three runs. However, Ronnie Dawson singled with two outs in the top of the ninth and Kuhn drove him home for the eventual game-winning run for the Buckeyes.

Yianni Pavlopoulos (3-4) earned the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, while Josh Martsching (2-1) took the loss.

The tournament title is the ninth overall for Ohio State, its fifth since 2002.

Wise, Vanderbilt lead in NCAA golf

EUGENE, Ore.

Oregon’s Aaron Wise shot a 6-under 64 on Sunday at Eugene Country Club to take the individual NCAA lead, while Vanderbilt remained atop the team standings.

“To do it out here, with the greens rolling 13 [on the Stimpmeter] and the rough up, is pretty special,” said Wise, a sophomore from Lake Elsinore, California, who will turn pro after the event.

He had four straight back-nine birdies to reach 6-under 204 with one round left.

“Aaron’s special,” Oregon coach Casey Martin said. “We’ve said it a lot, but he proved it today on a big stage.”

Vanderbilt’s Matthias Schwab, from Austria, was two strokes back after a 67.

Hamilton wins Monaco Grand Prix

MONACO

After crashes, engine problems and eight races without a win, Lewis Hamilton’s jubilation was evident as he threw himself into the arms of his Mercedes team after winning Sunday’s rainy, incident-packed Monaco Grand Prix.

Despondent Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo started from pole position and finished second — after a blunder from his team which failed to have his tires ready — and Mexican driver Sergio Perez was third for Force India.

Hamilton’s victory was even sweeter because he closed the gap on championship leader Nico Rosberg, his teammate, who finished a lowly seventh after obeying orders to let Hamilton pass early on.

Hamilton’s mood was in stark contrast to Saturday evening when — after qualifying in third place — he wrote off his chances of victory on a track so difficult to overtake on.

Orlando City FC ties New York, 2-2

NEW YORK

Kevin Molino scored in second-half stoppage time to give Orlando City a 2-2 tie with New York City FC on Sunday.

Molino scored on a header from the center of the penalty area in the 94th minute to extend Orlando City’s unbeaten streak to three games. Carlos Rivas sent a cross to the far post that Cyle Larin centered to set up Molino’s sixth goal this season.

Frederic Brillant scored his first career MLS goal in the 42nd minute, and David Villa chipped in from the center of the area to give NYC a 2-0 lead in the 66th.

Julio Baptista, off a feed from Molino, rolled a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Josh Saunders into the bottom-left corner.
