Free meals for kids

AUSTINTOWN

This summer, free meals will be available to all children up to age 18 at Austintown Elementary School, 245 Idaho Road.

Meals will be served Monday through Friday from June 6 to Aug. 18. Breakfast will be served from 7:45 to 9 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Every Wednesday during the program, there will be a craft activity for children from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The Summer Food Service Program for Children sponsors this program.

Diabetes education

BOARDMAN

Mahoning County District Board of Health is sponsoring a Diabetes Empowerment Education Program for people with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes or a pre-diabetic condition.

The free program encourages small lifestyle changes while teaching about diabetes and the way it affects health.

DEEP is an interactive small-group workshop that will meet from 2:30 to 5 p.m. six-consecutive Wednesdays beginning this Wednesday at the Davis Family YMCA.

Furnishings for sale

YOUNGSTOWN

West Side Public Library, 2815 Mahoning Ave., which has closed and will be demolished for construction of the new Michael Kusalaba Branch on the same site, will offer the public opportunities to enter that building for a sale of surplus furnishings from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 6, 7 and 8.

A Friends of the Library Book Sale will take place there during the same hours June 6 and 7 and from 8 to 11 a.m. June 8.

There also will be a Farewell to West Library fundraising party for adults there from 4 to 9 p.m. July 14, with a $10 admission charge.

Closed for festival

WARREN

Mahoning Avenue at High and Market streets, Market at Mahoning, and Park and High streets at Mahoning and Park will be closed from 6 p.m. Thursday until 10 a.m. Sunday for the Trumbull County African American Achievers Association Festival.

Alta receives grants

YOUNGSTOWN

Alta Head Start and Alta Behavioral Healthcare have received three grants totaling $46,500 to support their work with children who attend preschool through second grade.

The grants will be used to support nutrition education, reading skills and remediation of behavioral issues.

The grants are: William Swanston Charitable Fund, $31,200; the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, $10,350; and the PNC Foundation, $5,000.

Wellness walk

The African American Male Wellness Walk Initiative of the Mahoning Valley announced former professional athletes and successful entrepreneurs W. James Cobbin of Youngstown and Deryck Toles of Warren as the 2016 honorary chairmen for the fourth annual African American Male Wellness Walk of the Mahoning Valley.

The event will take place at the Covelli Centre downtown Aug. 20, beginning with several health screenings at 7 a.m.

Cobbin and Toles said their goal as honorary chairmen is to increase awareness and address the health disparities for black males.
