Spielberg to Harvard grads: Be the movie heroes of real life

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg has told Harvard University graduates to become heroes in real life. Speaking at commencement Thursday, Spielberg invoked stories from his films and his life as he encouraged students to take on the world’s woes.

He told them the world is full of villains, such as racism, homophobia and religious hatred, and the response to them should be empathy.

Spielberg has won Oscars for best picture and best director for “Schindler’s List” and best director for “Saving Private Ryan.” One of his earliest hits, “Jaws,” was filmed primarily on the Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard.

He earned a degree from California State University, Long Beach, in 2002, after dropping out of the school in the 1960s.

Police say they’ve arrested a Brooklyn rapper in connection with a deadly shooting at a New York City hip-hop concert.

Police say 30-year-old Roland Collins was arrested Thursday on weapons, menacing and reckless- endangerment charges. They say more charges are possible.

The Brooklyn-based performer goes by the stage name Troy Ave. He also was shot in the leg Wednesday night.

Police identified the slain man as Ronald McPhatter. Relatives say he worked as a bodyguard for Collins.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Collins had an attorney who could comment on the charges. A message left at a number listed for him hasn’t been returned.

The concert was to feature a performance by rapper T.I., but police say he didn’t take the stage.
