Haus Auto captures bowling title


On the occasion of its 54th annual banquet and golf outing hosted May 14 at the Valley Golf Club in Columbiana, the Boardman Businessmen’s bowling league recognized Haus Auto as champions of the 2015-2016 season.

Haus Auto outdistanced Backs and U.S. Chiropractic Center 3-1 in the championship match with actual scores of 2758-2350.

In winning the league championship, Haus Auto was led by Joe Marzano who rolled a 620 set and contributed a high game of 226 with Gary Janis adding a 215-559. Leading Backs and U.S. Chiropractic Center was Walt Shaw with 189 game and 549 set. Remaining members of Haus Auto include Rich Gozur, Bill Heid, David Hutch, Billy Schmidt, Dom Yazbek and Joe Yazbek. Other members of the Backs and U.S. Chiropractic Center team include Robert Angelo, Adam Celedonia, Zack Jugenheimer, Brian Shaw, Duane Thompson and Cody Wyatt.

Placing third after losing a semi-final match to the league champions was Cat Racing. Straub Insurance finished fourth. The Cat Racing team consists of Jeff Cohen, Robert Hian, Harry Jones, Tom Panagopoulos, Tom Seefried, Dave Stanko and Boardman Lanes co-proprietor Rich Wilson. Straub Insurance team members include Floyd Barron, Bob Cochran, Kevin Kriner, Casey Kuntzman, Chuck Straub and Jack Ulansky.

Marzano won the high average award with a 214, surpassing Rich Evans who finished the 32 week season with a 208. Others with 200 or more averages included Cochran (207), Bill Artz (206.81), Mike Dohar (206.23), Barron (205), Dick Marlowe (204.48), Kriner (204.22), Heid (203.59), Dave Kiraly (203.51), D. Yazbek (202), Mark Naples (201), William Smith (200.81), Wilson (200.32) and Glenn Milton, Jr. (200.05). Angelo Bianco and Dave Rudy, Jr. just missed the 200 threshold with 199.39 and 199.27, respectively.

The season was highlighted by 298 games by R. Evans and W. Shaw with Evans also recording a 774 high set. Other high actual games were recorded by Marzano (290), Milton (289), M. Dohar (288) and Bianco (287). Other outstanding high actual sets were rolled by R. Evans (772), Kiraly (762), Barron (748), M. Dohar (740), R. Evans (738), Smith (737), Artz (736) and D. Yazbek (735). W. Shaw rolled a 316 to win the high game with handicap award while Barron’s 787 led the league with the high set with handicap.

Phil Puryear and George Rohan, III tied for the most improved award with both increasing their averages by 14 pins over the previous season.

The following teams also received recognition: Haus Auto and Waste-Tech both with high game actual’s of 1198; Haus Auto with a high team set actual of 3266; Purmar with a high game handicap of 1233; and Backs and U.S. Chiropractic Center with a high team set handicap of 3486. Waste-Tech’s team members include Artz, Sean Flanagan, Kiraly, Marlowe, Milton and Jim Mitchell. The Purmar team is comprised of Don Campbell, Shon Kessler, Dave Kuszaj, Naples, Puryear and Ralph Zupo.

Other teams not previously mentioned include Santa Fe Roast Beef (Anthony Behann, Bianco, Rocky Page, Smith and Don Wittman); T.W. Pet Center (Jason Bird, Matt Dodson, Dick Evans, R. Evans and Rick Spokane); Atty. Knickerbocker (Mark Beil, Dave Bernat, Dale Kushma, Dave Pekarcik and Mike Piccoli); Magic Moments Photo (Dave Billock, Tom Billock, Mark Bleggi, Ron Chick, Norm Dibkey, Phil Frame, Rudy and Jim Waring) and Home Carpet (John Dohar, M. Dohar, Mike Prokop, George Rohan, Jr., Rohan, III and Lou Zitello).

The year-end singles/doubles handicap tournament produced several high scores, including a 707 actual set by Bernat which enabled him to win the singles portion of the annual event with a high handicap set of 761. Other high singles tournament handicap set scores were rolled by Frame (711); Spokane (704), Naples (699) and Marlowe (689).

Former 50 year league member Bill DeCicco rolled a 690 handicap set (with a 621 actual) in the Wednesday Night League singles tournament at Fairview Lanes in Fairview Park, Ohio. Bernet and Pekarcik combined efforts with a 1395 to win the doubles portion of the tournament. Other top doubles team finishers were Kessler/Naples (1379); T. Billock/Frame (1378); Marlowe/Milton (1320); Barron/Ulansky (1310) and B.Shaw/W. Shaw (1298).

The Boardman Businessmen’s League was formed in 1962 by the late Ed Theis and late Dick Wilson just two years after they constructed Boardman Lanes as the Mahoning Valley’s “first ultra-modern bowling center.” The league is one of the oldest in the Greater Youngstown Bowling Association. League officers are Wilson - president, Beil - vice-president; Dibkey - secretary/treasurer and Milton - Sergeant-at-Arms. DeCicco serves as the league’s historian while Denise Simon maintains the league’s records.
