Former Canfield High School graduate sponsored for mission trip

Ashley Haley, a Canfield High School graduate of the class of 2013, is being sponsored by United Christian Ministries at Kent State University to attend a Global – Service Learning Mission Trip to Managua, Nicaragua.

Haley will leave on May 16 and return May 23. Her goal in attending the trip is to help improve the lives of those less fortunate in this impoverished country. Twenty-five people are attending and they will work alongside a local non-profit agency, exploring social justice issues and improving the quality of life in rural communities around Managua. They will work directly with community members, learn about their challenges and develop long-term economic goals. Their concentration will be in improving the housing in the area from the current cardboard houses to an upgraded mud house, and also work on an improved education system for the children.

Haley is currently a junior in the Nursing Program at Kent State University Main Campus. She said she chose this field because she feels best when she is able to help others. Following graduation next year she plans to continue her education in the medical profession. Along with her studies, she is currently employed as a Nurses Assistant at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Boardman and a Sunday School teacher at Silver Lake Church in Kent. She has been a member of a Christian Organization Kappa Phi at the University for three years, which she has recently been elected as president.
