Two Youngstown State football players have now been charged with improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle.

Lee Wright, 21, is the second to be charged after Casimier Mitchell was initially arrested during a police search early Sunday morning.

Mitchell’s bond was set at $7,500 and he was released on Tuesday at 12:56 a.m. after posting bond. Wright is still listed as an active inmate on the Mahoning County Sheriff’s website.

Reports said a YSU police officer heard three shots followed by a car speeding up Wick Avenue with three men inside laughing.

According to the report, the officer interviewed all three, who initially told officers they didn’t hear any gunshots but admitted there was a gun in the trunk.

According to the report, the officer found a loaded .380-caliber semiautomatic pistol plus a magazine of ammunition that had an empty shell casing inside.

The report said as the officer was checking the car Mitchell admitted firing the gun. He was then arrested.

Wright, a junior linebacker, started all 11 games for the Penguins in 2015. He was named a second-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selection and was also named to the MVFC’s All-Newcomer squad. He led YSU with 78 tackles and was tops on the team with 48 solo tackles.

Mitchell is a redshirt freshman linebacker.

YSU football coach Bo Pelini did not return a call or text message seeking comment Tuesday,

A YSU Athletic Department representative said Tuesday there are no immediate plans to release a statement.
