Candle caused fire
YOUNGSTOWN
Reports said a candle on an enclosed back porch led to a fire about 5:10 a.m. Tuesday that caused $15,000 damage to a West Side home. Crews called to 377 S. Hazelwood Ave. saw a large fire on the side of the home when they arrived. Two women who were inside the home managed to get out before firefighters arrived. Three firefighters suffered electrical shocks before Ohio Edison could shut off the power, reports said. The two women are being helped by the Red Cross.
Sinkhole backfilled
YOUNGSTOWN
A sinkhole on South Schenley Avenue caused by a broken 30-inch storm-sewer line has been backfilled.
Other work to pave the road and fix the curb will be finished by Friday, said Charles Shasho, deputy director of the city’s public-works department.
The sinkhole was discovered Monday afternoon, and the sewer line was repaired Tuesday afternoon.
The problem didn’t cause the road to close, Shasho said. The sinkhole was just north of McCollum Road on the city’s West Side.
Theft at business
LIBERTY
Police arrived at about 4 a.m. Sunday at Belmont Wireless, 3103 Belmont Ave., to find a ransacked cash drawer and disheveled cabinets. Various cellphones, a laptop computer and a semiautomatic 9 mm handgun were reported stolen. The glass door appeared to have been shattered by a block of concrete. Police found a cellphone, still in its box, in an alley near the business. They are reviewing surveillance footage.
