Mahoning Valley unemployment rate increased in April


YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Valley’s nonseasonally adjusted unemployment rate in April was 6.4 percent, up from April 2015’s rate of 5.8 percent.

In the three county region that includes Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana, the number of unemployed went from 14,400 up to 16,100 while the number of employed also increased, but only by 100, according to figures released today by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

The civilian labor force, which is the sum of those employed and unemployed, jumped from 248,000 in April 2015 up to 249,000 in April 2016.

Officials said last Friday Ohio’s unemployment rate rose again in April as 13,600 jobs were lost over the month.

The state unemployment rate was 5.2 percent in April, up from 5.1 percent in March. February’s rate was 5 percent.
