Protest, trip planned

YOUNGSTOWN

Jason Cooke, a local animal-rights advocate, is organizing a peaceful protest of Petland and bus trip to Columbus today.

The Ohio Senate Ways and Means committee has removed an amendment in a general tax bill, HB 166, which would have impacted how pet stores in Ohio acquire their animals for sale. However, similar language has been introduced in both chambers of the Ohio General Assembly as a standalone bill – SB 331 and HB 573.

These industry-backed bills would void local ordinances that prohibit pet stores in the state from selling animals from puppy mills, like those recently passed in Grove City and Toledo. Cooke has organized the protest at Petland, 2740 London Groveport Road, Grove City, Ohio. Participants will then board two school buses at 12:30 p.m. that will travel to the Statehouse to attend a 2:30 p.m. hearing for SB 331.

There is no cost to participate in the event. Contact Cooke at 234-855-5847 for information.

3 felony charges

AUSTINTOWN

Officers arrested an Austintown man on three felony charges on Monday morning.

According to the police report, when officers responded to a domestic dispute on Carnegie Avenue they discovered Devin Telego, 21, had an active warrant out of the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office for three felony counts of endangering children, for which Telego was indicted on May 14.

The felony charges were a result of Telego allegedly causing brain damage to his 3-month-old son in January.

Officers arrested Telego and took him to the Mahoning County jail.

Construction delayed

AUSTINTOWN

Construction of the new playground and pickle ball court has been delayed because of rainy weather, said Todd Shaffer, park supervisor, at the Monday township trustees meeting.

He estimated both projects, costing $68,000 and $5,000 respectively, will be underway in about a week.

Shaffer said because the caution tape is up and it is a safety hazard otherwise, children are not allowed on the playground until further notice.

Both projects are funded through the Westchester Fund, a fund collecting excess money from rent paid by facilities housed in the Westchester building.
