Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley, 655 N. Canfield Niles Road, is dedicating its first community Purple Heart parking spot at 10 a.m. Monday.

The organization also is presenting a check to pay for painting of other Purple Heart parking spaces throughout the community.

The purpose is to lead the way in the Mahoning Valley acknowledging the heroes who have gone above and beyond in what they have given to the nation, to educate the public about the Purple Heart and to honor those recipients for their sacrifice, officials said.

Those participating in Monday’s ceremony are Dale Barringer, DAV Post Chapter 2; Herm Brewer, commander of the Purple Heart Association; Jim Davis and the Rev. Rick Stauffer, Austintown trustees; and Christina Peloquin, Hollywood Gaming director of marketing.

Culvert replacement

Dennison Ashtabula Road, between Wakefield Creek Road and York Street, will be closed Monday through June 17 for culvert replacement, the Trumbull County Engineer’s office has announced.

The recommended detour route is west of state Route 87, north on state Route 46 and east on York Street.

Dear Pres. Obama

The Jon Bowermaster film “Dear President Obama” will be screened at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Room 1010 of Moser Hall at Youngstown State University.

The event also will include a live video chat with Mark Ruffalo. The film offers commentary from residents of communities impacted by the United States energy policy.

OVI checkpoints

The Mahoning County OVI Task Force, in conjunction with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, conducted two OVI checkpoints starting Saturday night through early today.

The checkpoints took place from 10:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. on Market Street at Hilton Avenue in Youngstown, and on South Avenue at Larkridge Drive in Boardman.

In addition, police from participating agencies of the MVOCI and OSHP are conducting saturation patrols in various parts of Mahoning County throughout the weekend.

Found dead in car

YOUNGSTOWN

City police are investigating the cause of death of a man found in the parking lot of Burger King on Midlothian Boulevard around 5 p.m. Friday.

According to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, police said a woman found her husband passed out in a vehicle outside of the fast-food eatery.

Crews pronounced the man dead after arriving at the scene.

Officers believe the man may have died of an overdose, but are awaiting an official ruling from the Mahoning County coroner’s office, TV-21 says.

The victim’s identity has not been released.

1 killed, 1 hurt in fire

COPLEY (AP)

Firefighters in Northeast Ohio say one person has died and one has been injured in an early morning hotel fire.

The fire at a Hawthorn Suites broke out just before 5 a.m. Saturday in Copley, just outside of Akron.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause.

They say the person who was hurt is being treated for serious burns at Akron General Hospital.
