Richard Marlin named ‘Guardian of the Menorah

Richard Marlin will be honored by B’nai B’rith as the 2016 “Guardian of the Menorah” at a tribute banquet planned at 6:30 p.m. June 5 at Temple El Emeth, 3970 Logan Way.
The award is presented to outstanding community members who have demonstrated, through service and commitment, their devotion to the causes of youth and the Jewish and general community.
Marlin, born in New Castle, Pa., graduated from the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy in 1972 with a bachelor of pharmacy degree. After graduation, he moved to Pittsburgh to work for Thrift Drug Co.
He was involved in BBYO, formerly B’nai B’rith Youth Organization, the leading pluralistic teen movement aspiring to involve more Jewish teens in meaningful Jewish experiences. There, he met his wife, the former Ronna Weinberg.
He was active in Aleph Zadik Aleph, an international fraternal organization for Jewish youth. He attended two BBYO international conventions and the International Leadership Training Conference.
The Marlins moved to Youngstown in 1976. He was a pharmacist with Allen’s Drugtown and in 1981 was promoted to director of professional relations. In 1998, Marlin became director of pharmacy for Allen’s PharmaServ Inc., a specialty pharmacy serving nursing homes, assisted living, hospice, Belmont Pines Hospital and patients with special needs.
Marlin taught at Youngs-town State University as an adjunct faculty in the Allied Health Department from 1987-97. He also served as a drug-use evaluator for the Ohio Department of Human Services and a member of Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation Health Partnership Program Stakeholders group.
He served as president of the Eastern Ohio Pharmacist Association, board member and president of Ohio Pharmacist Association and a member of the Ohio Pharmacist Foundation. He is a member of American Pharmacists Association, Ohio Pharmacists Association, International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists and a fellow of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacy.
Marlin serves as a preceptor for students from Ohio Northern University, Lake Erie College of Pharmacy and Northeast Ohio Medical University and also is a member of the steering committee of the Northeast Ohio Care Coordination Collaborative.
Marlin also was a board member of Mahoning Valley Epilepsy Fund and served on Trumbull County Career and Technical Center Medical Programs Advisory Committee. In 1998, he received the Goodwill Industries Service Award.
Active at Temple El Emeth, Marlin has served as a board member, education committee chairman, secretary, treasurer, president-elect and is currently co-president with his wife.
He was president of Commission for Jewish Education, Youngstown Israel Investment Club and Youngstown Zionist District chapter of the Zionist Organization of America. With Youngstown Area Jewish Federation, Marlin is on the board of directors, federation investment committee and the recently formed long-range strategic planning committee.
He also serves as a co-trustee of Frances and Lillian Schermer Trusts, which supports charitable programs in the Youngstown area, Israel and California.
He and his wife of 41 years have a married adult son and three granddaughters.
