Illinois athlete back after charges dropped

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.

Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman says Jaylon Tate has been reinstated to the basketball team after a misdemeanor battery charge against him was dropped.

He was accused of striking a woman in March, but the charge was dropped Tuesday for lack of evidence. Whitman said Tate had “shown exceptional character during this unfortunate situation” and hoped fans will welcome him back.

Whitman also said Friday that Kendrick Nunn’s suspension from the team is still being evaluated. Nunn pleaded guilty to misdemeanor domestic battery and received probation earlier this week after also being accused of hitting a woman.

A third player, Leron Black, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor aggravated assault and was sentenced to probation. He was reinstated to the team but will sit out six games.

UEFA clears Russian soccer team

NYON, Switzerland

UEFA has cleared title-chasing Rostov of Russia to make its Champions League debut next season by lifting the threat of Financial Fair Play sanctions.

UEFA says Rostov fulfilled the terms of an agreement imposed last year when the club violated rules to curb overspending on player transfers and wages.

Rostov qualified for the next Champions League by ensuring a top-two finish in the Russian league, which plays the final round on Saturday.

Rostov was this week cleared of doping suspicions by FIFA, which last week conducted surprise testing on the team.

Djokovic could meet Nadal in French Open

PARIS

Novak Djokovic could face nine-time champion Rafael Nadal in the French Open semifinals in his quest to complete a career Grand Slam.

The top-ranked Serb, who will face Lu Yen-hsun in the first round, was put in the same side of the draw as Nadal. Djokovic beat Nadal in the quarterfinals last year, the Spaniard’s second loss at Roland Garros.

Defending champion Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray could meet in the other semifinal match.

Djokovic has lost in the final in three of the last four years on the Parisian red clay. Winning the French Open would give him four consecutive major championships, something no man has achieved since Rod Laver won a true Grand Slam in 1969.

Rio Olympics to top London for condoms

RIO DE JANEIRO

The International Olympic Committee says 450,000 condoms will be distributed during the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, a number it says is three times more than for the London Games four years ago.

Part of the large increase is because female condoms will be available for the first time — 100,000, along with 350,000 condoms for men.

The IOC said the condoms would encourage 10,500 athletes and staff to practice safe sex.

The Rio Olympics open on Aug. 5.

The condoms will be distributed free from a clinic in the athletes’ village, or from vending machines in the village.
