Ursuline doubles team qualifies for state tournament

AKRON

The Ursuline High School doubles team of Luke Tsudis and Austin Arfaras qualified for state by winning twice on Friday in the Division II district meet at Springside Racquet and Fitness Club. “They’ve had a great season,” Ursuline coach Rob Reilly said. “Their hard work is really paying off.”

Tsudis-Arfaras defeated CVCA’s Ian Yoder-Jason Render (6-2, 6-2) and Chagrin Falls’ Matt Esterer-David DiStaulo (3-6, 6-0, 6-3).

“They didn’t do anything particularly different today,” Reilly said of his freshman pairing. “I’m absolutely excited about them. “If they keep working hard and they can stay healthy I think they have a chance to make it to state all four years.”

Cardinal Mooney’s Andrew Stille-Jacob Stefko was the only doubles team to win one match. The Cardinals defeated Beachwood’s Kevin Zhang-Andrew Feldman (61-6-4), then lost to NDCL’s Charles Forbes-Mark Beebe (4-6, 6-1, 6-4). Poland’s Sam Delatore-Sam Scotford and Warren JFK’s Zach Shoaf-John LaPolla lost first-round matches. In singles, Lakeview’s Zach Teffner was the only local player to win once. The Bulldog defeated Akron SVSM’s Mike Chmura (6-1, 6-0), then fell to Hawken’s Sauren Khosla (6-4, 6-4). Falling in first-round matches were Cardinal Mooney’s Andrew Engartner, Niles’ Ben Wakefield and Ursuline’s Les Horvath.
