Canfield Village Middle School students participated in a Walk for Diabetes the week of May 9. All students in grades fifth through eighth used their gym class times to walk laps around the gym or the track.
The school collected donations during the week which were then given to the Mahoning Valley Walk Benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, to take place at the Youngstown State University Watts Center on May 21.
Mahoning Valley Walk Benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is being organized by Tim Styranec, whose son is a CVMS student.
“We are very excited about CVMS walking for diabetes and donating the money they collect to the Mahoning Valley Walk Benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. It is so nice of them to think of us and help us raise funds. Juvenile diabetes, or Type 1 diabetes, is tough for kids and it is tough on their families, too. The money raised here at the school and at our walk at YSU will be used to fund research to find better treatments and a cure for Type 1 diabetes,” Styranec said.
The CVMS Walk for Diabetes was organized by school nurse Regina Reynolds, and carried out by physical education teachers Bob Tinkey and Caitlyn Carver.
“Our Walk for Diabetes is a symbolic walk to find a cure for diabetes. The students give up their time and they do a great job and have a great attitude about it. They understand the meaning behind it and realize what a great cause it is,” Tinkey said.
Styranec stressed that the CVMS Walk for Diabetes and the Mahoning Valley Walk Benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation are also about awareness.
“Both these walks raise funds for diabetes, which is so important, but equally important is they will both raise awareness for diabetes. Many people don’t know the facts behind the disease, and part of our focus is to educate people about the disease. For example, the cause of Type 1 diabetes is unknown and there is no cure and 30,000 children, teens and young adults in the U.S. are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes each year. People with Type 1 diabetes must test their blood sugar several times a day and take multiple shots of insulin just to stay alive. Those are the type of facts we want people to know, and we think our walks will help inform people of such important information,” Styranec said.
